AMV Minis Season 2 Entry Rules
No longer accepting entries at this time.
Please do not submit anything.
Please read these rules in their entirety.
1. Content
For the most part, your entries should contain anime, and should NOT be adult in nature. Please try to avoid excessive violence, sexuality, and strong language. Most episodes of AMV Minis will be intended for viewing by a wide audience.
Also, all entries should be 30 seconds in length, or shorter. If it goes over by just a tad, it might be acceptable if your video is really good. PLEASE try to keep your videos as short as possible. Get the point across and then end it. I'm much more likely to accept a mediocre 5 second video than a mediocre 25 second video.
2. Humor
All entries should try to be funny in some way. I would advise sticking with jokes that the majority of viewers will get. Also, please avoid putting the main joke within 1 second of the beginning or ending of the video, as the transitions may cut into it.
Try to be original and unexpected. Don't rehash old jokes that have already been done.
3. Production Quality
Please put some hard work and effort into your entries. If it looks like it was tossed together in 5 minutes without any real care, then it will probably simply be rejected. Your videos shouldn't have fansub subtitles on them or a "divx" logo or any other crap like that. This is serious business. Also if the video quality looks bad it may be rejected as well. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, DON'T GET YOUR SOURCE VIDEO FROM A STREAMING SITE LIKE YOUTUBE.
I suggest you read the Video Quality For Dummies thread: http://amvhell.com/showthread.php?t=3104
4. Selection Process
When I receive an entry, I (or other appointed judges) primarily look at two things. "Is it well made?" and "is it funny?" If I answer "no" to both of these questions, then the video will probably be rejected. If I answer "yes" to both of these questions, then the video will probably be accepted.
If the video is funny but poorly made, I may request that you modify or redo it. For videos that are merely "ok", the selection process can be highly subjective. Shorter videos tend to have a much better chance of being accepted.
5. Accepted Formats
Target output specs are:
848x480 if widescreen, 640x480 for fullscreen.
23.976 fps Progressive
If your video doesn't meet these specs, I can still work with it, but ideally you should try to target these to begin with. Please don't send me interlaced videos. Almost everyone does for some reason.
I would suggest that you submit your video as a high quality h.264 MP4 or MKV. Use CRF 18 or lower. Audio should be 320kbit AAC or 320kbit MP3.
Other formats may or may not be accepted. Be warned that using other formats may impact the quality of your video. Don't send me quicktime files.
The easiest way to get your video into an acceptable format is to:
-Install AviSynth (http://sourceforge.net/project/downloading.php?group_id=57023&filename=Avisynth_258.exe&a=40895168).
-Grab Zarx264gui (http://amvhell.com/stuff/zarx264gui/).
-Export your video from your editing program in a lossless or uncompressed format.
-Load your video into Zarx264gui, set the quantizer to 18 or less, set audio bitrate to 320 (or quality 0.6 or higher), and press Encode.
6. Entry Form
Sign up for a DropBox (http://db.tt/HzXU1WB6)account and upload your video into your public folder. Then fill out the entry form located here: Form removed, do not submit entries
7. Follow Up
You can track progress on your video in the AMV Minis Entries forum (http://amvhell.com/forumdisplay.php?f=11). Correspondence is conducted ONLY through the threads in that forum. So you must make sure to check it for updates every now and then. I will try to let everyone know whether their video has been accepted or rejected in a reasonable time. However, sometimes it can be easy to forget. I get lots of entries, and I have a life outside of this. If a month passes by without any reply, you can send me a private message asking what was decided.
I would recommend that you also SUBSCRIBE to the AMV Minis Entries forum (you can do it by clicking here (http://amvhell.com/subscription.php?do=addsubscription&f=11)), that way in case you forget to check it, it will notify you whenever I reply about one of your videos.
If your video is rejected, the thread will be closed. This is just to help me keep things organized. If you have questions about why your video was rejected, you can send me a private message about it.
You might see a star rating appear by your entry thread. A 5-star rating means that your video was accepted. All other ratings are merely codes used internally to help keep things organized.

1) Xvid in an AVI container, compressed with constant quantizer 2 or 1, and disable B-frames. Use uncompressed audio or 320kbit mp3.
2) x264 in MP4 container. Use CRF 18 or lower. Audio should be uncompressed or 320kbit AAC or 320kbit MP3.

You mention that if the picture looks bad you wont accept it. What about if it was an artistic choice.
I made a video using audio from the opening to the 80's He-man cartoon and video from Eva. I purposely made the picture quality VHS quality, kinda like watching one of the old He-man episodes on VHS.
Would that be accepted?

Do we need padding of some sort? i.e. or additional footage or a second of black on each end?
Also, what's the policy of putting one's avatar or name in the video? I noticed in AMV Hell 3 and 4 there were many logos in the lower right hand corner.

Don't put black, use additional footage.
AMV Hell 3 had logos but 4 didnt. I thought it was a bad idea after using it in 3, so no, don't do this.

check the resolution (if NTSC/PAL) it should "weigh" at least 4 mb/second, if thats the case its probably good enough quality. Though 6 mb/second would mean its truly good quality. If not, choose the "highest quality" setting in Windows movie maker and then use Tunebite (thepiratebay[dot]org) to encode it in XVID highest given quality

I've added some notes to the rules about humor.
Also, this apparently isn't obvious to most people, though it should be. Don't just submit "obvious" anime/song combos and expect me to take it. Just matching a clip from an anime with some lyrics to a song does not make it funny! I can't stress this enough! Also, making a character lip sync to a funny audio clip does not make a funny video! Your videos should surprise the audience in ways they would not expect. For example, let's say someone wanted to use DBZ with the Mortal Kombat song. It matches, yes, but a match doesn't equal funny. What would be better is if you used a completely unexpected anime with the Mortal Kombat song, such as Hello Kitty. It comes across as unexpected, and has the potential to be quite funny!
Feel free to discuss your own ideas about what humor is.
daikaisho vanguard
06-01-2009, 04:58 PM
I'd like to add, that I think an obvious combination of song and anime, telling an unexpected story, can be funny too.
Used on the examples above:
DBZ with the Mortal Kombat song can be funny too, if the story told is, that Son Goku want to sell his car to you.
If it's well made, of course.
Or an example from the real world:
I'm working on a clip combining Howl's Moving Castle with a love song. Not very original, but I hope it will be funny, as the main story I'm telling is, that Sophia is freaking out over the door in the cliff.
Doomimus
06-01-2009, 05:12 PM
Feel free to discuss your own ideas about what humor is.
If we're talking unexpected combinations, DBZ + "I Will Always Love You" = pure genius.
On the other hand, audio matches can fit the anime's tone and still be funny, such as Perry Had a Pimple with FLCL, or Shout Your Lungs Out with Azumanga Daioh. In these cases, both the scenes from the anime and the song are tongue-in-cheek, fun, or silly.
And some defy explanation, like "The One and Only" with Azumanga Daioh. I think it's funny, though I still don't know why. XD
Doomimus
06-01-2009, 05:20 PM
Some things I keep in mind when doing AMVs:
Visual or verbal puns
Exaggeration
Pop culture references
Similarities between certain scenes or characters (anime or non-anime) that often go unnoticed
Satire (like commentary on cliches like fan service, character archetypes, etc.)
Comedic timing with energetic music
Pieces of animation that look funny when looped (e.g. Sakaki trying to shake off the Kamineko)
It helps enormously to know your source material. In the end, though, it's a matter of interpretation. I think it helps to ask yourself "Does it make me laugh?"

Also, please avoid putting the main joke within 1 second of the beginning or ending of the video, as the transitions may cut into it.
How much will the transitions affect the video? Will the first and last second be usable for the video (not the main joke), or can it only be intro/outro?
How about the sound? Will the sound be affected by the transition?

Well, the transitions only cut in a few frames actually. But you need a bit of time for the viewer to adjust to the change, so its best to not have anything important right at the beginning or end.

Actually, I'm sort of afraid a lot of clips this time were more ME than either Hell or Blitz. :p I was debating doing a solo project before I caved in and sent 'em all in to Blitz, and if they reject certain particular ones, I probably will do that. I sometimes think I have a really strange sense of humor, and am the first to admit that several of my clips were just frikkin' weird.
Anyway, I had a couple left over that Minis might be able to use. :p Now, except for the long-awaited Curry epic, I am done with video-making for a while. Time to get back to writing...

It's better if it's english, but if you have subs make sure they are easy to read.
I'm confused.
Also, is there a set date for submissions?

That's what I do if the situation calls for it, just hope that the quality doesn't suffer too badly.

The subtitles in question here, are subtitles added by yourself. Like translations of a song in another language or misheard English lyrics or your comments to a situation.

I have to ask about a clip I am doubting will be accepted. I have a clip with video from End of Evangelion, the scene with Shinji watching Misato have sex, and I placed some Clockwork Orange Audio in the scene the quote
"And the first thing that flashed into my gulliver was that I'd like to have her right down there on the floor with the old in-out, real savage."
would that be accepted for submission to the tribunal?

Read over the copyright stuff. If your video complies, they will allow it. In a nutshell:
-Use 10% or less of the song.
-Use it in a parodic manner, like you're using the song to make fun of the song.
-Don't offer download links to it, and give credit to the original creator. The "No Downloads" thing may seem kind of a no-brainer, but some people are just that stupid.
abyssion1337
07-03-2009, 02:00 PM
actually legally it doesn't have to be less than 10% as long as it's being used as a parody; in practice youtube doesn't care about it but they've been sued a couple times over it(they settled out of court)

-the audio clip is nine seconds out of a 137 minute film.
-The audio clip fit with the video clip (The scene of EoE where Shinji sees Misato and Kaji having sex). Audio is from "A Clockwork Orange" the quote "And the first thing that flashed into my gulliver was that I'd like to have her right down there on the floor with the old in-out, real savage." Maybe they don't like that the audio is used in the same context. But Serendip LLC pulls anything off you tube pertaining to A Clockwork Orange.

I have a question... I haven't created an amv yet in my life but there is one I'm planning on doing. There is a certain part of the amv I'm planning that is super hilarious as I have told many friends the idea for this part and they bust up laughing.
So my question is, is it a good idea to go ahead and make the mini and then down the road go ahead and make a full blown amv of the song and anime?

I would consider it anime by a small margin as I consider it above all else as market-whoring CGI!!!

I considered spirits within final fantasy cause the story was FF style I guess people just dont know how to use...IMAGINATION....well you guys do but ya
Animegirlzzzzzzz
07-22-2009, 01:06 AM
It's visual style was undoubtably FF and there lay some notable references but in this science fiction storyline, not much was left to imagination as was to allusion and admiration. I somewhat admire but mostly deplore and overlook the fact that people didn't feel ripped off by Advent Children only because it helped gave us the cutscenes in FFXII...

I'm putting together an AMV using the Shaft theme song, and using an anime with short clips from a love scene.
Now, I read the part in the rules about posting sexuality, but I just wondered if I appropriately censored the video, if it would still be such a problem.
Again, this short clip is a parody of the opening from Shaft, but won't be nearly as graphic.

i have 1 question - i just completed what i think is could be a good candidate for either a mini or amv hell 5 - but the description says to keep the file as .avi - yet when i use that zarx program it converts it to .mp4 - is that right or do i need to choose to keep it avi?
kapparomeo

When you're composing your clip, save it as an .AVI - ideally uncompressed, but if you're using Windows Movie Maker Zarx264gui can also accept DV compression. Then, process the .AVI with Zarx264gui, and the resultant .MP4 is the file you need to send on the submissions page.

I only have one question I like to ask in regards to the first two AMV minis... It wasn't until today that I found out about the minis, although from what I was able to gather, AMV hell was announced at around the same time AMV Minis 3 was released... My question is simple, There were alot of really good pieces in the first two minis, would there be a possibility that a few of them would be added in AMV 5 or are they disqualified due to the videos that were already featured?
Other than that, can't wait for next year to try my luck at AMV Hell...

just a quick question - and i'm sure the answer will be no but i'm just curious -
If there is no reply to the AMVHELL@gmail.com about potential ideas in..(however long its supposed to take) and a clip that seemed maybe "too good" for the mini's - is there any possible way it could be upgraded to be sent to amvhell 5(or whatever number its on at the time)
i already have my 1 entry for the week on the minis and just waiting for a reply through the email as per my potential "idea" the clip is already finished so i can send it to anybody else that maybe in charge of amvhell 5 to take a gander at it.

I just have a quick question about my video before I submit it as an entry.
I finished making it on Windows Movie Maker for Vista (I don't have the money to get any other movie editing program) and I published it in two formats, .AVI and .WMV. (I'll just convert them to MPEG4.)
The .AVI file is interlaced and the quality isn't very good, but the bars on the top and bottom look normal. The .WMV file isn't interlaced and the quality is much better, but the bars don't look right. Since the original video source (which is DVD quality) had smaller bars in it, WMM made those black and the rest of the bars a gray-ish color on the .WMV. It just looks strange.
Which one should I submit as an entry? And if my entry does end up getting accepted, is it possible for an editor to crop the bars out of the video or something?

Alright, I get the rules but you seem to imply strictly anime, I've seen Katamari Damacy, Resident Evil 4, and oher video games used in the AMV Hell series. I'm wondering if I could post something Metal Gear related?
Also I noticed throughout the series using audio from stand-up comedy acts seems to be uncommon or at least unpopular. There was a Mitch Hedburg audio clip in the deleted scenes to AMV Hell 3 and George Carlin in one of the episodes of AMV Minis. Is that something you don't want?
Zarxrax

Sure, you can use metal gear.
For audio choices, I *prefer* that people use songs or music, because I like them a lot better.

Given what we've seen in the past, it may be a couple of weeks before we get any answer to that. Besides, I'm certain that Zarx is busy with compiling the last Minis episode for season 1. Stopping the submissions probably is giving him a little breathing room in order to clear out the overflow of clips so we can start fresh with season 2. I have changed the recommended file uploading site.
Upload your video to http://www.mirrorcreator.com/ (http://www.mirrorcreator.com/) and then fill out the entry form located here: http://amvhell.com/misc.php?do=form&fid=1
When uploading to mirrorcreator, please be sure to mark the checkboxes for MegaUpload, ZShare, and ZippyShare. You may also mark additional ones, but please be sure to at least use these 3.

Uhm, one question.
I downloaded and used Zarx264, yet it gives me some trouble... it makes only mp4 files (says MKVs are not supported), and the quality is pretty ****ty... I used a lossless avi, 848x480, and followed all of your indications. The avi was made and encoded with Sony Vegas 9. Could you please suggest me what am I doing wrong? Looks like I can't do a MKV directly with Vegas... thanks for your help.

As Zarxrax says in the first post, .MP4 is an acceptable format so don't worry about not being able to make .MKV files. To improve video quality, lower the "Quantizer" value in the Zarx264gui interface.

Ok, thank you. I set it to 18, but it looks like it's too much. I guess it has something to do with the ratio of keyframes to frames? Or rather the 'key areas' of the frame? I see that the video has a 'squared' aspect due to low quality, and each moment there are squares from the past frames left. Actually I hope this is not a problem of the player and codecs... though I installed Quick Time and that should do for mp4.
Anyway, just technical curiosities. Not that it really matters ;).

Set it even lower, man.. I like to use somewhere around 2.5. 1 is perfect quality, but no one really uses it because it takes too long and the file ends up being large.
You should use something less than 10, though, usually.

Tried with 2, it's still bad :(.
Do I need special codecs? I don't have much installed into this OS, currently... or should I try with a different software? Like, is AVI-Mux any good?

Do you have latest version Zarx264GUI and newest codecs?
Version 1.33. I installed AviSynth 1.27, not sure about the codecs (maybe I should try installing CCCP). As I said, I'm using my secondary Win7 installation, I don't have many codecs here. But I installed QuickTime and I thought the codecs for mp4 went along with that.
---------------
OK, solved thanks to CCCP. Sorry for the inconvenience :p.

23.976 fps Progressive
Why?
Some anime have real 30fps in original.
Gungrave and Haibane Renmei have true 30fps.
First Squad have 25fps on DVD and 24 on BD.
And if you right encode with x264 23,976fps in 29,97fps, then when the video is played in the player it is displayed 23,976fps without duplicates and blending.
Sorry for my English.

Nope.avi
Not all videos are funny, some just kick ass. As long as the audio "works" with the video there should be no worries. There is no way for me to really explain how audio can just "work" with a video but its easy to pick out a few when watching the AMV Hell series.

From Wikipedia:
Interlaced video is a technique of doubling the perceived frame rate introduced with the composite video signal used with analog television without consuming extra bandwidth
If you didn't understand that, I still don't think you have to worry; it sounds like you won't run into the problem as long as you don't actively try to do it.
RBRat3
08-10-2011, 03:51 AM
Most of the interlacing problems (My guess) is users that are using premiere aren't setting up their project files properly by selecting pre-defined presets which some have a field order set then just changing the resolution either in the settings or on the export. This is a biggie, Just because you set progressive on the export doesnt make it non interlaced what that does its just encode a video thats interlaced (by the field settings) in a progressive format where no deinterlaceing has been done hence the ugly ass lines on movement. CHECK YOUR PROJECT SETTINGS!!!!!!!!
I do believe CS4 corrected this issue by automatically deinterlaceing footage thats being exported to progressive from a field set sequence but even then this is not the correct way to do things, This is a quality killer.
Premiere is the only program that I can think of where a user can easily make this mistake and over look especially a first timer, Course premiere was designed to work with video cameras and not encoded AMV footage.
On another note, when exporting a video in premiere and you choose to deinterlace a video thats not interlaced or making the mistake of having a field order set for the sequence it will churn out a semi-pixelated video, Ive seen this in a alot of clips. And just to bitch TAKE OFF FRAME BLENDING when time stretching!!!! This is anime only use it when you really really need to.
What Frame Blending does....

How sexual does it have to be for it to go against the rules? Btw it is ok if the song uses the word "Pussy" or "Dickaah"? I'm asking cuz i was wondering if the clip could include a rape scene, well a least attempted rape, there is no nudity, matter of fact is isn't technically rape cuz he didn't penetrate her, but it can be a bit disturbing. By my next favorite was always mediafire.
Or I guess there's always the option of switching back to mirrorcreator as an alt.

Mediafire is probably the best alternative. Their retention is about a month which is pretty decent, but there were times when I wouldnt get the file in time.
MirrorCreator sucked because most of the choices (and especially the default ones) were CRAP, and lots of people just used the default ones.
