- I still don't get what was going on in that science clip. Liked the editing on it so it probably just went over my head.

- Cutting like that in the "congratulations" clip resulted in it looking far more jarring than i thought it would...

- Rape/molestation is always funny....till it happens to you.

- So, pikachu is a "mouse" pokemon so i guess him with speedy Gonzales audio works in theory, but i think that fell kinda flat.

- I laughed at the efren lied hand joke more than i should have...Comedic delivery shined through there.

- The Akira clip was nicely done and very clever.

It's serviceable i guess. Too bad this season ends with the trend of problems that plagued season 2 through out. (not to say cracks didn't show in season 1)

Well, I can't really comment on the editing, but I can comment on the sound clips + videos themselves.
To me this is a very lackluster end to S2, granted with AMV Hell 6 coming soon, it should be expected, but the only really funny clip I got even an ounce of a laugh out of me was the final one. And that's only because of the inside joke, that the youtube crowd probably won't get.
all the rest seemed to be trying keep 'relevant' with the times, as shown by that Gangnam Style clip which, has Haar himself pointed out was just the sound clip thrown onto people dancing. All this video needed was "Somebody I used to Know" or "Call me Maybe" and it could be called Mini's: Viral 2012 Edition.

To me it was a serious offender in "haha it's funny because I get the reference!" type of humor, which is rarely funny.
The funniest clips were honestly the Welcome to the NHK clip at the beginning of the video and the Elfen Lied (as mentioned for the comedic timing, despite seeing the punchline from a mile away) and those were the ones that got an chuckle out of me, the rest barely got a grin.

Call me an elitist. Say that my opinion is ****. Say I lack a sense of humor. I don't care, this is my opinion the matter. It was a very lackluster clip, and if what is said is true by some of the contributing clip editors, some of the clips had their audio changed by judge mandate, (namely the Gangnam Style vid) which is just plain terrible.

I sincerely hope, that it is lackluster because of all the time and effort being put into Hell 6. Although, I am beginning to seriously doubt it.

Sorry, I'm not sure if I understand what that means. At any rate I think we can all agree that the age of the average user on this site is pretty young. We're sure to get people who don't understand what makes something especially funny or clever or just something else about the off-putting qualities of a video. Also when you're dealing with young people if you straight-out call them stupid they're going to go out of their way to defend their honor and then the stupidity will escalate, and nobody gets smacked when things go to retarded lengths because this is the internet. All I'm saying is that if we're willing to respect each other more it's only beneficial.

I'd like to make note that all the judges agreed this clip was good/well made. However, i guess it wasn't LCD enough. Call me a whiner or attention whore if you like. But seeing those subs made me think priority needs to be seriously evaluated. Before you say that **** though, remember i'm complaining about WHY it was rejected being bull****.

Besides the fact that we give the judges the third degree too you want to imply that the LCD that can't seem to read should get none of the blame just because they are taking advantage of something? We should accept their mediocrity when they know damn well their video sucks? I'd assume they are smart enough to compare their stuff to a "adequate" video and go...."gee...this is kinda bad." Responsibility to a extent falls on them too as they should have enough self respect not to spread their **** wherever they see fit and expect everyone not to mock it.

For the record, I was against the Gangnam Style video, and if anyone's curious it was originally set to "Thriller" which was even less fitting. Overall, this episode was made with much higher quality control, but the lack of submissions toward the end was somewhat depressing. Besides one or two submissions that made it in that I personally thought were questionable, I think this was a solid episode and a good way to end the season.

No, I'm referring to all that visual noise in my prison rape clip. That, and the rough edges in my shin chan clip. As for that watermark, Zarx could've just cropped that out himself in like 5 seconds, so that was again, the fault of you and Zuii for not suggesting that, more than anyone else. The lip syncing was pretty off in the Berserk and Joshiraku clips. And then there's biggest issue of those subtitles clearly visible in the first clip. You can even see the nubs of the standard script fansubs at the bottom of the screen.

I will say that I didnt expect a Gangnam Style clip in this episode since the song was only recently made popular. I wondered if this was gonna be in Hell 6 but of course the deadline was months before the song was made. The only way that the song would be in 6 would be because SSG probably made one just in time for the premiere, so I wont be surprised if the song is in 6.

No, I'm referring to all that visual noise in my prison rape clip. That, and the rough edges in my shin chan clip. As for that watermark, Zarx could've just cropped that out himself in like 5 seconds, so that was again, the fault of you and Zuii for not suggesting that, more than anyone else. The lip syncing was pretty off in the Berserk and Joshiraku clips. And then there's biggest issue of those subtitles clearly visible in the first clip. You can even see the nubs of the standard script fansubs at the bottom of the screen.

Hypocrisy is not enforcing the rules of a guide you wrote because being lax nets more attention from the LCD. What haar is doing is driving the point home in self aware fashion that the quality of minis went to **** due to apathy.

I really don't like that way of thinking. Nobody said bad material should be an acceptable thing and we agree that there's an excess of crap videos. The bar gets lowered when one thing makes a new standard, not everyone doing something spontaneously. It's not like something can't be redeemed either.

Wait until enough quality videos have been submitted to release an AMV Mini. As quality decreases, time between video releases increases. Interest drops, which may cause a vicious cycle.
Lower the bar to allow for less-than-ideal videos. This keeps the videos flowing, but has the side effect of encouraging those who create lower quality work. Essentially, it hurts the signal to noise ratio.
Or, keep the time between video releases stable and the quality high, but shorten the length as necessary based on the number of quality submissions. This could be awkward if you have a call for videos and just don't get many submissions (the live action Mini certainly took a while to fill up - but was worth it). Do we want to see micro Mini's of only a few clips?


And of course, this is all subjective. I didn't find many of the clips funny this time around - others did. There's also the tendency to view the past through rose colored glasses (although it's hard to argue that AMV Hell 3 didn't utterly rock :) ).

Fundamentally, what makes a great video is it stands on its own even if you don't know the referenced material - but it's that much better if you do. As soon as you rely on people knowing the references, you'll get swaths of people saying "this sucks", just because not everyone watches the same stuff. Of course, if you just use the same shows, then people complain about that.

Hey, I say is there aren't enough good submissions it's vacation time. A delayed video is bad for a little while but a bad one is bad forever.

That said, I have every AMV Hell video on my computer (except 0 and /0, **** that) so it the quality hasn't gotten to the point where I hated a video.

Same here (although I have to check if I have AMV Hell 2 - it was borderline). I certainly haven't hated any, but I just haven't felt the bust-a-gut crying-laughing on recent ones the way I still do on some older content. YMMV and all that.

I still remember when my friend sat me down for AMV Hell 3 the first time - he deliberately skipped the opening so I wouldn't know how long it was. I think we were 15 minutes in before I asked "wait a minute, how long *IS* this thing?", and he just busted up laughing. Still one of the more amazing experiences, the first time you watch over an hour of AMV's, and they're almost all awesome.

I saw AMV Hell 3 with my friends at college, it was the first AMV I've ever seen and I enjoyed every minute of it. I remember how much I laughed that I thought I was gonna die (you can die from laughing). It was because of 3 that I became a AMV Creator and entered contests at conventions (get better every year)

Okay, Gentlemen, while I much enjoy a good ****storm, why don't we compromise?

-Judges: Two of you never participate, so hire two new judges to the panel and be more strict about content allowed? They'll come out less and less, but I'd rather have rare quality than a steady stream of ****.

-Clip Editors: Instead of sending in clips you KNOW are bad, why don't you do your best and contribute clips you personally find funny or amusing? Most of you aren't bad, and I've seen good quality from you, so if you keep complaining about ****...why do you keep submitting ****?

-Everyone Else: Admit it, whether or not some clips were funny or not, this was a very lackluster entry into Mini's more so than most.

As long as this keeps going, whether you judges or editors like or not, Mini's, heck, the production of Hell in general will just continue to be lackluster or outright ****. Its not just the fault of one group or the other it's the fault of BOTH. Bottom line is that there needs to more critical judges and people who send in clips need to ensure it's their best quality work. So we don't just get crummy video with a popular song. Like the Avengers clip in Live Action Hell or the Gangnam Style vid this Mini. Good things don't come from half-assing, aim for the best common denominator and don't just settle for "Oh, people on youtube will like it." or "this clip is lackluster, but I'll send it anyways" personally I would like to see good quality humor and clips than half-assed clips with viral songs that the youtube fantards will eat up but the more critical members will shake their head at. I want quality humor, I came to this site because AMV 3 and 4 were some of the funniest things I had seen done with AMV's period. Now, It seems the quality of standards from both clip submitters and judges have grossly decreased to the lowest common denominator.

Of course he did, and he was praised by the anti-Panda brigade for continuing his valiant efforts of quality checking the mean old stupid judges. I went out of my way to try and be the toughest judge this episode, yet end up being the scapegoat for the 3-4 lackluster submissions. He actually told me these weren't quality checks, then of course when the episode comes out and his videos get pointed out as the weak links, he was supposedly testing us again. I'm just tired of it . . (I'm venting by the way, can't sleep and had a few drinks), we've got some people on this site that think that's proper behavior and that they can go around insulting Zarx', insulting judges, and insulting our fan base saying we shouldn't even listen to them because they're supposedly idiots who don't know good entertainment. Well I'm done. I try to be polite and listen to the requests of our site's resident hipster trolls, and get nothing but negativity in return (what a shock). These people do not have the best interests of the site in mind, and they care nothing for the fans, all they want is for things to be run around here their way . . I said my peace, I feel better now. -.-;

Well, folks. This has definitely an interesting experience. In all honestly, I didn't think this episode was absolutely terrible. In fact, it was an improvement over episode 10 of season 2, in some respects. I still enjoy watching these Minis for the occasional good clip and the lulz that occur in the forums. That being said, I'm just bored waiting for AMV Hell 6 to come out and probably wouldn't have posted even half of this stuff if I wasn't bored out of my mind right now. Thanks for getting so riled up over some forum posts.

Panda, based on the threads I've seen you make, I know you've played at least three Bethesda RPGs, and thus should understand the concept of lying. It's not like people don't lie on the internet all the time anyway, thus you should be wary of this sort of thing happening.

Me, I'm dishonest. And a dishonest man you can always trust to be dishonest. Honestly, it's the honest ones you want to watch out for, because you can never predict when they're gonna do something incredibly... stupid.

So, now you're comparing Paradise, a series with no judging involved at all where everything gets in no matter what, to AMV Minis, a series where videos are reviewed by judges that tell you whether or not your video is good. I think you just invalidated your own point. Also, if a video has to be accepted into Minis for you to improve, that is yet again your own folly.

I thought this one was pretty good. The scene choices fit well, it was fairly fun overall, lightly funny, and I had no real complaints. I never saw the subtitles in it even after watching about 5 times. I guess I don't make a habit of looking in the bottom corner.

That didn't sound like classic Looney Tunes, it sounded like a modern style song. I never knew the clip was from Looney Tunes and I don't get why you'd need a reference, because clearly the song and anime show a crazy girl in love and a guy wanting to get away.

Somehow it didn't play out right, maybe the Porky Pig type voice was too out of place, maybe the editing could have been better. Reference wasn't the problem as what was sung was pretty clear.

The subtitle was a really ****ed up misstake from my side and im deply sorry for that, it wont happen again. I guess it was because it took alot off time finding the right clip for the sketch, so by the time I was finish, I was too exhausted to realize that the top off the subtitle was still visible:S

I know this isnt an excuse but im extremly new to the site (even thou i have followed amv minis and amv hells for a long time) and this is my first time uploading sketch to amv minis so im still a "newbie" in that term. But I will take the criticism with me for my next sketch so I wont make the same misstakes^^ Im also very glad that people find the sketch amusing even thou off its flaws:D

And one more thing, because I never had the chance before, I would like to thank zarx and all people who have made amv hell / minis available. I've had much joy watching all the minis episode and the hell movies over the years! You guys are awesome!

From the western animation episode back when i was a giant **** up and didn't have enough sense to zoom...Zarx, why didn't you crop this out along with other times watermarks appear? Is it due to not wanting to damage the video's quality/ screw with artistic integrity? I feel you could revise the rules to state you will crop this stuff out if the video gets accepted. Welcome to the NHK - "I'm Awesome"

It's funny 'cause it's true... funny in that bleak, despairing, hot red tearfully stinging pulled-smile way.

I did not notice the subtitles until they were pointed out to me. Normally I dislike seeing subtitles, but I don't mind it here precisely for that reason - it was unobtrusive, the graphic design suits the original sign - and when you go back and look at it, it only makes the character seem even more pathetic!

Crayon Shin-Chan - "Pee"

I liked this clip for the strong parallel between the audio and the video - I always get a kick out of recognising a visible connection.

Fullmetal Alchemist - Beauty and the Beast

I also enjoyed this skit - I'm always a helpless sucker for showtunes in any case, but it was also well-edited with Armstrong's exhibitionism suiting the mood of the song. The last zoom on "Barge" was just out of step, though.

Interstella 5555 - charlie teh unicron

A decent quickfire gag-skit that skipped along pacily and didn't overegg itself.

Fruits Basket - We Are In Love

This skit was excellently-composed - I loved the strong lip-syncing in particular.

Fooly Cooly - Men in Black

This skit sparked a big shiny grin from me - the pose strutted with "I make this look good" perfectly evokes the mood.

Fist of the North Star - Hold Me

A good example of the "dissonant" style of skit, ironically juxtaposing wildly different but complementary material.

Berserk - Army of Darkness

Unfortunately, this skit disappointed me. The concept itself is fine, but the freezing of the frame when Guts isn't speaking is embarrassingly obvious. Rather than freezing the entire frame, the editor should have cut out a shot of his closed mouth and pasted it over as a mask so that the background flames could move uninterrupted.

Elfen Lied - "Midnight Blue"

Uncomplicated, but competently made.

Neon Genesis Evangelion - Congratulations

This was a fun, lively skit and the quick syllable cuts kept it bouncing along and didn't let the link get slack.

Acchi Kochi - Lavos' Theme

This was an intriguingly offbeat skit which built up to a powerful climax - if it wasn't for that channel ident in the corner! I'm sorry, but that is a real bugbear of mine. Sometimes we're limited in our source material, yes, but both shots could have been cropped without any loss of necessary detail.

Armored Trooper Votoms - Family Guy

A simple tale, but well-told. I enjoyed the consistent theme running throughout.

Akira - Sealab 2021

A very professional skit that was composed with visible skill. The lip-syncing in the first shot was near to flawless as I can tell, and the use of graphical effects in the remainder was also handled with seamless assurance.

Sengoku Basara - Gangnam Style

I enjoyed this skit. The dancers got your head bopping along to the beat, and that injection of energy was well-timed to carry you on through the second half of the video.

Joshiraku - Full Metal Jacket

This was one of my own skits, so I won't comment.

Legend of Reyon - The Boondocks

Hmm... while the moon is the most inoffensive sort of nudity (it happens a lot in kids' cartoons like Dexter's Laboratory, for instance), I'm still not altogether convinced that it should be on display in a Hell or Mini.

Excel Saga - We Are Young

I appreciated this clip's sense of attitude - you do sense the character glorying in what she's achieved (inflicted).

Tenchi Universe - "Judgement Day"

I enjoyed the use of the dub - it adds an extra layer of authenticity - and the dramatic music made it wonderfully absurd. I would have liked scrolling code down the side of the killcamera shot, but really that's just a petty nitpick and doesn't detract from the video at all.

Pokémon - Speedy Gonzales

I was astonished to see some earlier posts in this thread saying that people didn't "get" Looney Tunes. People have never experienced Looney Tunes? Good grief, it's as ridiculous as putting spoiler alerts on the Bible. I was subjected to something similar when a skit I made featuring Thunderbirds that went over some viewers' heads... stop making me feel old, chaps.

In any case, even if you weren't altogether familiar with Speedy Gonzales, I felt that this clip would have had universal appeal regardless - the fast-paced music and jabbering speech suits a nippy, zippy situation whatever the show.

Shiki - science

Again, it's not appropriate for me to comment on my own skit - but I will say that the doll was actually really creepy when I first watched the show.

Queen's Blade - SpongeBob SquarePants

There have actually been some really good "firin' mah lazor"-style skits this season - the "DR OCTAGONAPUSBLARGH" from an earlier episode was a delight, and this skit was also charged with plenty of spirit. It was unexpected, the bunny-girl's expression was suitably bizarrely distorted, the explosion in the video conveyed plenty of power, and the sound also resonanted strongly as well.

Excel Saga - Whistle

I suppose you could day something about just trying to unconcernedly whistle away being in flagrante delicto, but I'm afraid that this is one skit that did feel as though it was just marking time.

From the western animation episode back when i was a giant **** up and didn't have enough sense to zoom...Zarx, why didn't you crop this out along with other times watermarks appear? Is it due to not wanting to damage the video's quality/ screw with artistic integrity? I feel you could revise the rules to state you will crop this stuff out if the video gets accepted. Or is it too much of a hassle?

On watermarks, basically I don't care. If it can reasonably be worked around, for instance using a dvd version, of course I would prefer the watermark-free one. And for something like the divx logo, I basically have no tolerance for that as it can be turned off in an option.
Cropping off half of the video just to hide a watermark is just silly, and is a much graver atrocity in my opinion than just leaving the watermark on there.
And besides, millions of people have to see the watermark when they watch it on tv anyways.

It's gotten slightly better. Still plenty of ****, I agree, but that's kind of what I meant by "fun" in this case. Watching all of the drama that occurs there on a daily basis.

I admit I'd post there more often if the members were more friendly, but I know there's no chance of that, so I'll say something on there like maybe once a month and spend the rest of my time watching them bicker.

That didn't sound like classic Looney Tunes, it sounded like a modern style song. I never knew the clip was from Looney Tunes and I don't get why you'd need a reference, because clearly the song and anime show a crazy girl in love and a guy wanting to get away.

Somehow it didn't play out right, maybe the Porky Pig type voice was too out of place, maybe the editing could have been better. Reference wasn't the problem as what was sung was pretty clear.

I was astonished to see some earlier posts in this thread saying that people didn't "get" Looney Tunes. People have never experienced Looney Tunes? Good grief, it's as ridiculous as putting spoiler alerts on the Bible. I was subjected to something similar when a skit I made featuring Thunderbirds that went over some viewers' heads... stop making me feel old, chaps.


It's ridiculous that people would act like they don't know Speedy Gonzales, but if it weren't for seeing Team America: World Police and then having a Thunderbirds DVD catch my eye at my local library there's no way I would have heard ever of it.

As the creator of that Lavos clip, I am geniunely surprised that so many people didn't get it. Like Zarx said, it's a Chrono Trigger tribute, a game I adored when I was a whee little one back in the late 80s/early 90s. I sometimes forget that not everyone had the same experiences as I did growing up. More over, I figured the sheer absuridty of the scene, this red eyed yellow demon goo thing giving a somewhat "epic" scream, then pans out and it's no bigger then a small hosuecat, would incite laughter in those who didn't get the Lavos reference.

As to the watermark, that was very much my bad on that part. My sources are mostly TV Rips, as the DVDs for Acchi Kocchi hadn't been released when I made that clip. The next few clips I plan to submit will all be BD or DVD rips, so there won't be any watermark issues.

Though I may have to scrap the clip I'm working on currently... If this many people didn't get the Lavos reference, I'm willing to bet twice as many won't get the Kefka's laugh reference... Makes me depressed to realize just how old I really am...

I wouldn't be too worried about the visibility of references, BakaLyte. I've never played Chrono Trigger myself but even so I was fully able to buy into the spooky atmosphere of the music on its own merits. Not everyone will have seen every other media, but skits have their own independent qualities too.
