2: Still charming, the humor doesn't outstay it's welcome.
3: The standard by which all multi-clip AMV's should be measured. Parodies are funny, parallels make sense, and most clips can be understood by even the most casual of anime watchers.
4: Smidge too long. Has it's funny moments. Series variety a bit too trendy and not as diverse as before (e.g. Death Note, Lucky Star, One Piece, Excel Saga, DBZ). Some jokes are too niche and fall flat for people who don't have prior experience with the series, audio, or both together.

Well, I guess when it comes to critique, I guess I should start with the obvious choice, Hell 5 (seeing as there's a love-hate relationship between it and the forum's members.).

Well, generally alot of the disappointing clips were so because of the "overstaying your welcome" problem that sometimes arises. For you see, we AMV Hell watchers have abysmally short attention spans, so having the clip run too long ruins or lessens the effect of otherwise great clips.

A couple examples:
Rebel L/Death Note - Funny clip, and I'm quite fond of corny puns. That paired with the funny sounding vocals of "Rebel L", made the clip hilarious hilarious. But after L's final loud "LAAA-LA-LAAA" my laugher turned to mild chuckling because those last few seconds afterward caused too much of a falling action.
Halo/Halo - Same problem, different order. Now, I personally thought this one was hilarious, despite there not being much of a parallel other than the song being called "Halo." However, the first part of the chorus wasn't needed ("Everywhere I'm lookin' now"). The clip would've been funnier and shorter had it started only on the 2nd part ("You're everything I need and more")

Outlaw Star/Star Trek Rhapsody (Roll The Stampede): I'm not saying this because Roll The Stampede kicked the bucket. This was TRULY a genius clip.

End of Evangelion/My Heart Will Go On (Kusoyaro): The scenes match perfectly. Do I need to mention any more?

Golden Boy/White Girls (Roll The Stampede): Another one I liked. Who knew that the two would mix so well?

Azumanga Daioh/Bananaphone (Zarxrax): It was meh...until the music was cut off. THEN, it was instantly top-notch humor.

Azumanga Daioh/Rick James sketch from Dave Chapelle (Chaosprojects): Rick James was the only thing I liked about Chapelle's Show. Combining it with something very unlikely to work with it & making it work is the reason why I like this clip.

Neon Genesis Evangelion/Institutionalized (SSGWNBTD): I loved this one. I don't know why, but I loved it.

Worst (Not really the worst. Just the dull points of the video.)

Other "too long" clips:

Maria+Holic/Dude Looks Like a Lady : That definitely should have been half the length it was or less. Every shot should have been trimmed down as the effect would have worked regardless.

Ninja Scroll/Poison : too long a setup for kinda a weak joke.

Luckily, the Excel Saga/Scars video got trimmed down after the premiere. That went on way too long at AWA.

I liked AMV Hell 5 and felt it was worth waiting for, it's difficult for me to properly explain but the best ones that worked I think were the ones that had a good contrast or worked very well together.

Like the Doctor Who/Girl Who Leapt Through Time ones; basically the more interesting the idea of a crossover fanfic the skit is the better it is in my view.

Then you get the ones which arent related but well lipsynced and you see the content of the clip somehow matching the audio very well like the Inglorious Basterds/DBZ clip or anything that was CSI related.

Then you get ones that make use of alot of editing for humorous effect like the Gendo PHD/House MD affectionate parody, I love those.

Then you have audio clips that whose content is either ironic like the TAKEN sound clip with Ponyo (doube points since I think Liam Neeson was the voice actor there as well) or meshes with the anime premise fairly well, like the "be a girl for a day" song with the Kashamashi girl meets girl scene, not quite "great" but make good filler that are entertaining.

Then you just have the plain hilarious clips which are funny and matches well when juxtaposed with an anime clip, such as the Higurashi/Scary Movie skit.

Finally I think you got the "Cool Music with Cool Scene" skits like the Angels Beat!/Can't touch this skit, I like those.

It's difficult to say what was "good" about AMV Hell because well... It's all mostly good, easier to pick out parts that are bad:

I can't think of anything off of my head but generally its where you had too many non-comedic song/clip skits that "matched" one after another without being particularly funny.

Along with I think, a sense of "viewer anime clip fatigue" where you started to have a high density of only a certain anime clips near the latter half, I think there may have started to be a fair amount of Death Note and EVA towards the end.

Obviously a case of YMMV on whether some of the above really count as good or viewer fatigue but I hope it helps.

Gah dammit, I spent 45 minutes writing a critique of every single clip in this, walk away, and ten minutes later my computer has crashed. FFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUU

TL;DR:Needs about half an hour cut off, both in full clips and clips that would be funnier with ten seconds less material.
The last half has a lot of really long clips. The last 20% of clips take up a full third of the run time
Photoshooping stuff in still isn't funny, expect for the PaRappa sketch.
The Beck sketch at the end is hilarious until the FMP thing shows up and the flame noises from Timesplitters show up.

I loved this clip, the audio though is from a short called the Summoner Geeks. It was an extra you could unlock on the Summoner game for PS2 which if I remember right, was one of the original games for PS2.

Beckalocalypse was my favorite clip in the whole thing. Both of them. The first one (Blues Metal) was much, much better, but the second was pretty cool minus the last ten seconds.

Outlaw Star/Star Trek Rhapsody (Roll The Stampede): I'm not saying this because Roll The Stampede kicked the bucket. This was TRULY a genius clip.

End of Evangelion/My Heart Will Go On (Kusoyaro): The scenes match perfectly. Do I need to mention any more?

Golden Boy/White Girls (Roll The Stampede): Another one I liked. Who knew that the two would mix so well?

Azumanga Daioh/Bananaphone (Zarxrax): It was meh...until the music was cut off. THEN, it was instantly top-notch humor.

Azumanga Daioh/Rick James sketch from Dave Chapelle (Chaosprojects): Rick James was the only thing I liked about Chapelle's Show. Combining it with something very unlikely to work with it & making it work is the reason why I like this clip.

Excel Saga/Scars (Pyrolord): Even with the abridging of the clip from the AWA version, I still feel like this clip kinda lacks in delivering the joke.

I'd say I'd roughly agree about 50% with this list (not counting my vids), with the other half either not-quite Top 30 level (The Money Cat brings a smile, but it's not 26th best of show IMO) or just totally not my thing (Machadaynu).


I've noticed a lack of love for the Mind Game / Don Hertzfeldt clip. That's one of those "WTF I gotta check this anime out" type of AMVs like the NG Knight Lamune & 40 / Dragostea Din Tei and the Monochrome Factor / D&D ones.

A few of these almost made it to my top 30, but a lot of the ones you mentioned didn't make it for the same reason you didn't like most of the clips in my top 30: simply because they didn't do anything for me or that I felt the song/joke was overused. I also try to judge the clips based on the connection between the video and audio, rather than great audio just being tacked on.

To be fair, I'll admit also that I didn't get it or can't fully appreciate all of the jokes (case in point: the Soprano reference in the GWLTT clip). With that in mind, it's possible my top 30 list will change once I understand more of the jokes.
