Just to confirm, is a non-musical audio source from the 80's okay? I might be able to think of some ideas with some movie quotes, depending on what video sources I can put together.

but as for anime launched in the 80's are we using the Japanese,English or American launch dates?

i would think the rules regarding audio/songs and anime are same as 90s challenge, except its for the 80s instead, and you can actually use anime thats not from the 80s (though not couraged lol)

now to find some 80s songs and anime :3

I should read the rules more closely were encouraged to use anime from the 80's but not required to that's pretty cool.

It'll makes things easier for me on the anime front.

now I just need a song for the 80's.

Using a super-popular anime to make a clip/amv with? BLASPHEMY!!!

on topic: I'll have to do a lot of research on this one if I decide to do a clip. I don't immediately recall any 80's songs that I enjoyed enough to use in a clip. Heck, I barely remember any 80's songs that I DON'T like.

Yeah, me too. It's gotta be an incomplete list.

Take note, however, that those are animes that debuted in 1980 only, you still got about 9 years then. Still, too many missing animes from those years too.

All I can find are old Studio Ghibli movies, and I have not seen a single one of them, unfortunately.

Which means, only 80s thing here would be the songs or clips. Gotta find a good clip.

EDIT: Nevermind, found some more. Unfortunately, I didn't grow up with the 80s, so my options for anime are limited.

...ovas weren't a thing yet.

Not true. The height of their era was the end of the 80s and early 90s (when stuff like Bubblegum Crisis was coming out). Dallos, generally considered to be the first OAV, came out in 1983, and the trend caught on pretty quickly. A lot more were made per year, on average, than are made now; what we call "OAVs" now are mostly just little add-on episodes, with ONAs like Time of Eve being the closest we have to standalone OAV series.

I was referring to the specific year of 1980. I am aware of things like Dallos, Starship Troopers, Mellowlink, et cetera.

Yeah 1980 was by the same rules at the 70s went with anime, the OAV picking up speed come 1985 and in 89 it exploded into the peek of the OAV boom of the 80s happened all because of one movie Akira. It wasnt realy till 89 the art of the OAV was perfected.

As Megazone 23 shows, it was a staggered release with part 1 being made 1 year, part 2 made the next year and then a floundering three years till part 3 and 4 came out with a vastly lower animation quality. Again it was Akira jumpstarting the OAV boom and the Japanese economy at the time being in boom that got the next two parts out. As the same time the bust of Japan happened and so it was cheaper for people to buy one VHS or two, than a 26 to 100 ep series. So with a new found boon in the west and japan not being so strong cheap vhs was the answer.

The other thing was everyone trying anything to recapture the lighting in a bottle of Akira but on a much lower budget. Previously Ghibli movies were the only sure anime hit.

There is one major casualty of the OAV boom and Akira. The anime Venus wars, it was the most expensive anime at the time even more than Akira. It had set back after set back after set back, it was to be the highest quality anime ever.

Sadly Akira beat them to the punch leaving Venus wars to limp in almost a year later. It flopped at the cinema's and then was whored out to recoup its losses, even Laserdisc was a destination.

This is all late 80s after 85.

milleniummaster18
03-29-2014, 05:55 AM
I have indeed seen a couple of shows from the 80s. Back in the day, there was a lot of anime dubbed into my lingua mater that I loved to see every time I could. Among these titles were classics such as Ranma 1/2, Dr. Slump, Captain Tsubasa, Doraemon, and of course Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z.

There also was Hello! Sandybell, which for some reason I also found interesting. What I can recall from that series is that there's a garden the girl made and that
her father dies of a heart attack somewhere throughout the series.

SarcotarascusN
03-29-2014, 05:12 PM
Others I can think of (so we don't just get Dragon Ball, I'm pretty sick of that show in every possible way now):

Urusei Yatsura (Rumiko Takahashi's first series), Macross (the original), Dirty Pair, Touch (I've heard some people say it's one of the better sports' series), Maison Ikkoku (more Takahashi), Saint Seiya, Kimagure Orange Road, City Hunter, Yawara! (Naoki Urasawa's first series).

So yeah, if you're going to do 80s anime...please don't just go and make more DBZ clips. We already had a whole episode of that last season.

unless they use 80's audio, then it's ok. Remember, using 80's anime is ENCOURAGED, not REQUIRED. There's a significant difference between the two.
True. I'd rather see the new Jojo used though, as the 90's anime wasn't the best, but that's just me

Wouldn't an anime that had its manga come out in the 80's, be more encouraged than something which was released in any format later on?

does it matter? I'd rather see a great clip using a recent anime than a horrendous clip using an 80's anime.

That being said, though, it's still probably better if you can make a great clip using 80's anime.

I have 2 questions (total newb here, bear with me):
1. How many clips have been submitted so far? Last I heard there were only 5 or 6.
2. I know the deadline is April 22; but is that April 22 at 12:01 AM or 11:59PM?

I just uploaded my entry a minute before posting this--I guess I rendered my own question invalid!

On the time frame of the deadline there is no set time for the cut off when the day hits, the ability to submit a clip ends when Zarx signs in and closes it. He tries to be fair with the time since many of the members are in different time zones so there is a little leeway.

Great.
As if the 80s weren't bad enough.

My crazy, mildly retarded, aunt's favorite cartoon might overload an AMV.

I really hope this one isn't dominated by Jem clips. I'm a big '80s anime fan; I would have submitted something better if I found out about this challenge earlier and had more time to work on it (as opposed to finding out 3 days before it was due--LOL)
