I dont want to like 3. But I cant stop myself anymore.
4, 13, and 17 - all edited really well, but werent exactly funny.
6- Overused song? Maybe, but at least it was done good. Closely resembles the source music video
9- Good clip, and a +1 for the relevant censorship.
12- Goddamn Jem clips. Made me laugh, though.
The rest- Try harder, dammit

I enjoyed a few.
02 Liked the idea behind this one, despite all the motor mouth.
03 Have to admit, this one made me laugh the most.
09 Thought this one was alright.
17 Haha Now which JEM video to vote for...

I don't know if I just wasn't in the right mood to watch this one, but nothing here made me laugh. Could just be me. I'll come back and look at it again when I have more energy.

1: I have a feeling if i didn't hadn't seen "Akira, that would have died completely for me. That said, i still wasn't feeling it.

^ Hey buddy....see that? That's the unwanted frame that bleeded into your AMV. If you're going to edit with sped up frames like that, watch for stuff like this next time.
Besides that, the editing while looking unpolished was sorta fun in a "cute way". It wasn't terrible...Just meh to me.
3: I had to stop the video one second in to laugh my ass off for a couple of minutes only to watch it to the end and pause it to laugh for two minutes more. Now THAT'S outrageous....Truly Truly ****ing Outrageous! In short: "Gets my vote!"
4: Interesting clip. The synching of the sound effects was spot on to the point that i got kinda...disappointed when the explosions and shooting in the last half of the clip was mute. Overall, that was well done.
5: Sorry, the reference is in the back of my skull but i can't quite remember it. On its own the execution of it was solid to good.
6: That's it!? At comic style panel writing that you want to reference like in the "Take on me" video isn't going to cut it. Need more than that.
7: I couldn't really follow this one. All i can comment on is you probably shouldn't have had the first character's mouth move at all but keep the synch of the guy getting blown up...it looked like an attempted synch...?
8: That was an okay clip that was a bit fun for its length. However, i don't think it stands out much.
9: I thought it was setting up for a punchline or something but it just ends. Clip left me wanting more.
10: Same problem as 9 but with another problem...Given the changes in standards, unsynched lip flaps should be kept to a minimum whenever possible. I'm going to give the BoTD in regards to the quality considering this was 80's sources.
11: Yeah...I don't get it what's happening and how it relates to the music.
12: "Praise be to the virtue that is all things truly, truly, TRULY outrageous!"
13: Another clip where the synching of the sound effects is mesmerizing (those lights) and helps suspend belief alot. Especially the gun shots. Really, well done even if i don't find it very funny.
14: Love stinks...yeah yeah? Didn't do anything for me.
15: The same exact issue as the earlier "Take on me" clip.
16: I thought it was pretty meh. The lyrics didn't compliment the song imho.
17: Thees nigs ight 'ere be outrageous, yo!
18: That was a fun clip and i was totally into it, but then it just ended. Expected something more...Also, another unwanted frame! For god's sake, tighten up your editing.
Outside of the OUTRAGEOUS this episode was a let down for me. Kudos to the guys finding 80's sources to make clips with, but if you felt obligated, you would have been better off taking advantage of the fact that you didn't have to use an 80s anime.

Yeah, this was all very "meh". Probably the reason I didn't get any of the jokes is I only lived 3 years in the 80's, and haven't seen many anime from that decade.

1 This sort of goes along, its mostly just a song over stuff happening. With a little weird syncs. Wasnt fun.
2 Its starts of well. Then gets thrown with extra frames and too much forcing clips in by speeding them up to a stupid level and some really irrelevant filler footage. There is few clips that are normal speed and works well with the final part being very good. Ruined by the middle of the clip.
3 What can you say? 10/10 would bang!
4 its a good edited clip say aside from the slight and unessercy lip synch of "stronghold". However trailer/intro recreations aren't really funny unless done balls to the walls crazy.
5 One of those injokes....I dont get.
6 I donno how to comment on editing skills. However nice little joke. Not that funny but a little.
7 Starts off like in the middle of things, which sort of leaves me unprepared. Slight literal joke of "standing tall" aaaaand.... we hit the actual joke."Gold" after thats its just filler. Not all that good a joke.
8 Its so well edited...I cant tell if it was at all. So to me...its just music over the top of a scene and all that has to do with things is "hot ride" "riding into the sun" other than that. Neither goes together.
9 Lols another Five Star Stories clip didnt expect to see another in this. Sort of ok clip.
10 I understand the reference. That the final battle of of Macross is much like Transformers. One poor attempt at lip synching in this very low quality clip. If it was from the serise I can see why. However should have gone for the Macross Do you Remember Love ending fight. They keep that High quality. If you did use that one....well your sources are baaaad.
11 The bird looks like the bird from the last story Heavy Metal and you put one way ticket to hell over that since it's pretty much the theme to it....aaaand.....what am I missing? oh yeah something good about the clip. There isn't any.
12 Since we had so much 80s anime (or close enough) in this throwing in a modern clip really is off putting. Nice idea thats not really executed well or funny.
13 This time last year I sat down and watched an anime called Lily C.A.T saw the Alien references and AMV hell 6 was being made. I said "I could make this as an alien Trailer." Aside from not becoming an editor here for another year. I never made that clip. I still have not made that clip. Why did I not make that clip....cos its not funny. Also guess what.....Alien the movie was released January 1 1979. Meaning Trailers were made in 78 and the filming was before even then. Alien is not by definition an 80s source.
I was actually going to do this clip till three things, its 1979, it doesn't scream 80s at people and Its not funny. Whelp now someone has done it I can cross it off my idea's list and never think about doing it again.
This clip is not eligible for this challenge. Other than that it was made as well as any Lily C.A.T Alien trailer mash up was going to be.
14 Small joke.....and nothing much after that.
15 I am sort of onboard with this one. its not a 1 to 1 however the joke is "everyone acts like they are rotoscoped like in Take on me" however it doesn't lead on very much after the first few scenes.
16 What is even going on this clip? I dont get anything. Its just a song over a clip and I have no clue what the correlation is. There is no joke and no editing here that I can see.
17 This is actually the only other contender to winning this thing. Marred by the fact I know this clip is from else were by a certain someone. I dont know if I got the full punch....however I know maaaaaany other people will. So maybe I can vote at the chuckles i get from that thought.
18 I think i see the joke....but the clip is bad. Its not funny its boring and since its another "modern" anime in amongst 80s anime. It feel very off.

1. Nicely done.
2. A bit busy, but nice.
3. Funniest one, but only because it makes fun of itself. Just because Jem was animated by a Japanese Company DOES NOT make it an Anime. It was produced by an American company, and has a very American style to it. Jem clips should not be eligible for AMV hell. Ever (unless it's one of those special minis that focuses on non-Japanese cartoons)
4. It dragged on a bit, but I definitely saw how the Audio related to Sonic Soldier Borgman. Not bad.
5. Going back in time, how is that reference hard to get?!
6. BEST ONE. It looks just like the Take on Me video. Very well done!
7. Decent.
8. Done by yours truly! Akyho, This clip actually WAS edited. I guess I know how to edit videos well enough, but to make them interesting and/or funny? I'll admit, I still have a ways to go. Still not bad considering I didn't find out about this challenge until THREE days before it was due... but still not that great overall, I know. (Side note: my username had something to do with it being #8, no? I was born in 1988, and 8 happens to be my lucky number LOL)
9. Another good one. Short, simple, and to the point.
10. Video quality could've been better (I can tell they used a VHS tape), but otherwise very well done.
11. This clip has the same problem my clip had--good song (One of Sammy Hagar's better songs), good anime (anything with Satoshi Urushihara as the character designer is bound to look amazing), but they don't exactly go together that well.
12. Absolutely not. Jem + Modern Anime = Double Fail. No. Just no.
13. I actually liked this clip quite a bit... too bad the audio is from 1979, which makes it ineligible. (Oh, if only those stupid Jem clips were also ineligible...)
14. Nice ;)
15. Modern anime again... but even if it was an 80s anime, it still fails due to #6 using the same song and being so much better.
16. I thought my clip had issues with the audio and anime not going together that well.... then I saw this.
17. If I see ONE MORE ****ING JEM CLIP.... I will probably loose my head.
18. Modern anime again.

3 was the funniest in that it made fun of everyone who is butthurt over Jem being used, lol.
However, 13 was also the best edited and captured the tone of the original trailer and original Alien Film, it was mesmorizing, chilling and overall felt like a trailer for an 80's era Alien anime. (then again, I'm a sucker for the Alien franchise)
So, tough call for me. Everything else was only funny because all of the Jem pissed of youtube and non-regular members. I came for the raging comments, and youtube delivered, further exemplified by 3's taunting.

Kinda sad about the lack of love for 05, although the joke could probably have popped more--the series is "Time Travel Tondekeman," but I'm not sure the fact that the portal dumped them in the past was totally clear from context (apart from knowing what time portal vortexes tend to look like in anime). Maybe I'm just a sucker for Huey Lewis and the News?
It was cool to see TWO entries for Five Star Stories. 07 was legitimately funny but maybe overstayed the joke a little by doing the whole chorus. Also the first bit of lip-syncing was a lot less fun than the guy screaming.
09 was a funny concept but "Weird Science" is just not a "punchy" song, so it's hard to make a joke stick to it. I was tempted to try that song with Aura Battler Dunbine (the scene where a bunch of scientists are working in a cleanroom inside a medieval castle, building microchips and hooking them up to muscle fibers and giant insect carapaces) but I couldn't quite picture it coming together. You're a braver soul than I, 09-editor person.
14 may have been the most successfully "joke-y" one, albeit not super intensely edited or anything, so I'll be curious to see how it performs.
I liked a number of the other ones too but don't have much to say about them. 01 was well-cut but didn't do much for me as a gag. 03 successfully went from groan-inducing to funny (and I'm predicting a victory for it, though I don't think I've ever picked the winner in one of these). 13 was probably the most impressively put together, but it didn't quite translate into enjoyment for me (maybe just because I've not seen the Alien trailer it's riffing on).
All in all, it was fun. Good music, cool shows, and most people did a really nice job making ancient video footage look crisp and clean. Jem really wasn't as abused as I was afraid it would be. Shame on those of you who didn't use 80s anime, though (because 80s anime are the best).
But yeah, I am totally okay if my entry loses to some of these (which is good, because I expect it will).
A technical question (may give away which one was mine, so) My footage actually got stretched to 16:9 instead of playing in 4:3 with pillarboxing. I guess I assumed that the compiler would add pillarboxing to footage that was encoded for 4:3 playback, but should I have done that myself before submitting? I don't want to make more work for anyone, it's just that aspect ratios still confuse me to no end, and it doesn't help that Premiere Elements is kind of dumb about them.

Have I made it clear enough yet that I love stupid youtube comments? (As if there’s any other kind.)
This was another weak round. The “best of” video won’t benefit much by any of these being included in it.
It’s rather depressing to see a troll entry getting so much praise.
========
02 – Fujiko Davis Eyes – The sped-up animation looked a bit weird and there were also a couple of cuts with odd-frames like at the 0:35 mark:
http://i.imgur.com/E6o1R7I.gif
When the line “(she’s got) Bette Davis Eyes” hit, couldn’t you have found a close up shot of her eyes, at the very least?
Hardly funny, but I kind of liked this one, it just needed more polish.
03 – I think Anno who made this – Given its content and message- I would have placed this entry either first or last on the playlist… or made it the 02 entry.
That chap shaking his booty looks familiar… he seems like a good sport.
04 – Metal wars – Some nice editing here, good synergy, it felt like we were building up to something but then we heard the “They were soldiers of the future-“ line and… it ended.
That’s it? No punchline? What an anti-climax. Lame.
05 – Back in time – I’m not familiar with the cartoon, but it seemed to fit the audio nicely enough. Not particularly funny, but at least it was short and simple. I like short and simple.
06 – Take on me – It’s been a while since I’ve had to do this, and I thought we were all past this by now, but I must direct you to my signature, point (1).
Not only has “take on me” been used before (twice), but it has been used absolutely perfectly (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k8r7nIff9Rg&feature=youtu.be&t=15m18s).
Do your homework and try to be creative next time.
It also sounds like the audio cut out a little prematurely, watch out for that.
6. They edited it to make it look like the Take on Me video. They did? I haven’t seen SDFM but I somehow doubt that the editor here made the picture go black and white, mimicking the A-Ha music video like that.
If they did… well… damn, that is some good editing. I’ll give them that much.
07 – Gold gold gold – The chick REALLY shouldn’t have lip-flapped before the first “Gold!” It looked like a botched attempt at syncing and really killed the moment.
Maybe I’m in a minority here - but I really hate it when audio fades out at the end of a clip, it telegraphs the TV frame transition and kind of feels like breaking the fourth wall. Can we all please stop doing that?
10 – Dare you remember love? – That silence before the music hits at the very start may have been short, but it was still noticeable.
My rule of thumb is to start the audio (or at least- the part of the audio you want to be heard at the start of the clip) at the 0:30 mark in Audacity. (Three tenths of a second in)
http://i.imgur.com/hwN20Up.jpg
Other than that, well, obviously the video quality was poor and some of the choice of cuts took the energy out of the video, like that shot of Minmay lip-flapping to nothing.
13 – Animelien –
This clip is not eligible for this challenge. So, you surrendered to the thedarkmessenger and allowed a 70s entry, eh Zarx? Pathetic.
Sure, a few unnecessary censorship entries were questionable in their adherence to the theme, my own included… but this entry outright and unabashedly flouts the rules.
Congratulations, Zarx.
Rules no longer and will never have any meaning around here.
These challenges are now officially a joke. Not even a good joke. A farce.
You have poisoned your own creation and brought chaos upon AMV Hell.
If you no longer give a crap, then why should any of the rest of us?
Farewell, sir.
[/don’t take any of that seriously, you know I love you really]
[Actual critique] Not funny, but I praise the editing.
This was a great fit, in fact- it all seemed too perfect a fit. This really is just the annie-may answer to Alien, isn’t it?
The fuzzy quality ending could have been improved however, I mean- couldn’t you have just made your own image with the movie tagline and title on it?
http://i.imgur.com/fDmdRDB.jpg
15 – Take on me – See signature point (1). No synergy. No wit. No creativity. Nothing.
16 – I can fly – No he can’t. Way too long a clip for a joke that doesn’t even work.
17 – It’s Jem! I guess –

I sometimes change an aspect ratio manually if I notice that something looks clearly wrong, but I don't always notice. In the case of the video that has the wrong aspect ratio, well, that's how it was submitted. If you are submitting 720p 4:3 footage, then it should be either 960x720 resolution, or 1280x720 with the pillars manually added.

Hey, Mill- what’s the deal with the bracketed / not bracketed numbers anyway?
I'm glad you've asked about that.
You see, if I like an entry due to reasons that I cannot simply justify convincingly to my critical side in order for me to consider said clip--in good conscience--for a candidature towards my vote, I will go ahead and list its number between parentheses.
They're basically like "guilty pleasures" of mine, so to speak. In parallel to "honorable mentions", these parenthesised entries are not valid options for my pick when I'm running down the candidates.

13 - I would love to vote for this, but didn't Alien technically come out in 1979?

Jem isn't anime... Let's open a can of worms!
Dramacon. It's a manga, published by Tokyo Pop as an OEL (Original English Language), written by Svetlana Chmakova, a Soviet-born with dual Canadian citizenship. If an animation had been done, would it be 'Anime?'
How about the OEL manga 12 Days, written by Korean American (or maybe Korean, unable to verify) June Kim? What if that was animated? Or what if someone just 'motioned up' scenes from it and added music in AMVHell style?
And I've seen a HUGE anti-Avatar kick going on. Yes, Avatar was made for American audiences, but at first, I thought it was Anime because of the style. Where's the line? And most importantly, is it racist to capitalize Anime, but not manga?
Maybe the next challenge will be all Jem...
I voted for 3 just to be a troll. :)

I thought somebody else here said they did, or maybe I misread that guy's post. It was a late night for me. Maybe it was like that in SDFM to begin with, IDK.
That scene is indeed done in black and white with (deliberately, for once) choppier animation in SDFM.
C'mon guys, if you're not gonna bring an in-depth knowledge of 80s mecha anime, what's the point of having an 80s-off? That whole episode is like one classic, iconic moment after another.
Kay, gotcha. I'm sure there's an easy way to pillarbox in avisynth, I'll check into that for next time. Though I imagine I'll be working at 480p since DVD source footage and all.

With that logic we could have put in Laurel and Hardy or Charlie Chaplin. As many comedians say they were their inspiration and paved the way for 80s comedy.

Actually, no. It's not exactly the same thing as the example you're giving. (Arguably, sure,) the '80s, or at least the general spirit that was behind the culture of those years, didn't start exactly at 12:01 on the 1st of January 1980. I'd say that there is still a fairly wide margin of transition between the two decades where cultural products such as, for example, Alien, still manage to capture the characteristic "feeling" of the '80s despite being released only a little bit before that time period...
Time doesn't exactly tend to act like some kind of precise rocket science when it comes to cultural movements. Quit your ant****ing already, as the Dutch would put it...

So with that logic the 70s bled into the 80s meaning stuff from 80s to 85 even were invalid as they were 70s spirit buuuut 1990 to 95 IS valid since the 80s bled into the 90s.
Glad we cleared that up. Its just simpler to say 1980 to 1989 you know...the actual 80s.

My point exactly. That's the problem with culture; a cultural movement rarely just appears out of nowhere, runs its course for a while before finally flipping its **** one day and disappearing from the face of the Earth to give way to a new movement. What actually happens is that it often mixes and crosses over for a while with other movements and periods until it eventually dies with a whimper. This is why finding out when a cultural movement is born or when it truly dies out is a pretty difficult task, because culture doesn't just run on one track.
Let's make an example; back in the 1980, 1981 and even 1982, there was still a rather large number of (generally unnoticed or sub-par) movies that still stuck to a style that was more characteristic to the '70s. This is because a style that characterized an entire decade rarely dies out just like that with the change of a year. However, just because there were movies that still stuck to an older style doesn't mean that there weren't also movies in those years that were experimenting with more innovative and unorthodox styles that would later characterize the way movies were made in the '80s. In my own and many other people's view, Alien was one of those movies, which is why I don't think that considering it to be part of the culture of the '80s is too much of a stretch.
Since I'm assuming that we're all sensible and mature adults who can appreciate and differentiate between different cultural movements, it's up to us to figure out which movies belong to which current. Grouping up every cultural product that came out in a certain time period, especially in phases of transition between two different decades, as you are suggesting can hardly be considered a sensible thing to do.

But you're just giving us extreme examples from periods that are at least over 20 years away from the decade in question, and that are rather referencing the feel of the '80s. Alien, on the other hand, apart from being practically adjacent to it from a simple point of view of time, can be considered as an extremely close predecessor to the '80s sci-fi movie, if not one of the movies that actually started a style of movie typical of the '80s.
While "Drive" captures that general '80s feel, it is only evoking that feel in hindsight. Arguably, Alien is one of the movies that created a small portion of that feel.

There has been a lot of commotion about the video that doesn't exactly meet the rules of the challenge. I've been giving it a bit of thought. Maybe I shouldn't have let it in to begin with... maybe I should disqualify it.
But I have ultimately come to the conclusion that I will let the people decide by their vote. Is this video "80's" enough? If people don't think so then they will reject it by voting for something else. If people think its "80s" enough, well, maybe that says more about the other entries than this one.

I wonder what a world would have been like if did do that idea As well. Cos it really was close to me doing, oh well I got 1 vote for my terrible clip I hated after the first version, come night version later I loathed it.
The on the feedback of my clip no 7, I went bonkers sorting the end when it just clicked and came together. However by then I was blind on my start, after the feed back I watched a few times and then loudly exclaimed "YES! THIS IS WRONG!" did ruin the flow of the clip.
However there seems to be no real complaints about the rest of the clip and any votes I didn't get was because of the Idea didn't really capture them and its a fair result on my clip.*

As already said, this was one of the outcomes where the win would not dirty the legitimacy of the challenge theme as much. Still, you've got to admit, it came really close to compromising the whole "stick to these unambiguous boundaries" mechanic. A bullet was just dodged, and by not much.
It's for that reason alone that I am somewhat relieved by the fact that I didn't contribute to this challenge, even though I originally meant to. More on that another day.

The latter, definitely.
Garbage, by nature, doesn't thrive; so, its effect is rather minimal. Good clips, on the other hand, tend to make a decent bargaining chip when talking about negotiations and backroom deals.
Take into account that I only take issue with this heavily due to the fact that the minis challenge is a competition, I wouldn't really mind if special considerations were done in order for a good clip to enter in a non-competitive project.
Restating: Yes, I would rather have a ****ty clip done within the rules than a good one that's just outside the rules, since that way, everyone is given an equal amount of opportunity in regard to the what they are able to do. You know, being fair and square at least in the rules.

Wow XD I am sorry for the amount of anarchy my clip caused. Main reason I didn't use Aliens (despite it being from the 80s) was the audio wouldn't have fit as well with Lily C.A.T. (considering marines, little girl, lack of cat etc) and the Thing isn't in space so would have been hard to work that in. 15 years later he is just the same...except dateing my sister. Thats weird but more so he was driving her around in his car. I actualy freaked out when I heard. Cos I would trust that dude with a dead fish in that car and expect him not to crash, let alone my sister.
They broke up...why? cos he took her out to dinner and she went to pay he said "no no, I will pay for you." she tried to pay and he insisted and she let him. Next day his family learned of this and phoned her up to give her abuse over it.
Since aparrently "no no Ill pay." turned into him ranting about how she used him and only going out with him for his money...........yeah like I said and idiot.
Another Scott I didnt like was in college, computing class. He would end up watching the same episode of South park over and over. It was the world of warcraft episode. I asked him after 4 months of this, "I suppose your big into World of warcraft?" he said very honestly "Yeah I like this episode." I asked about the game itself. He very honestly said "What?....thats a real game?" I went over it with him and he said "cool I need to play that!" then went onto researching it on the net.
This was 2007.......

Am i missing something here? Your sister offers to pay and AFTER he insist he pays she gets **** later for "using him." That can't be real, and if it is...**** dating.

He was a moron and his family were overprotective of him. I mean my sister is an moron herself....except she is a genius compared to him.
It was a family crisis realy. Me and my dad had to step in on the phone because my sis was in tears and when I got the phone I just heard the torrent of "your useing my wee boy! your a despicable little girl!" to which I replied "hold your ****ing tongue!" which surprised the mother to hear a guy roaring back at her.
My sis didn't actually care for the dude. Except she was good friends with his little sister and she had turned against her. So it was a mess.
Ended with the father threatening to come over and me and my dad saying "Cant wait!" he never did turn up.

After this I am sure that will be plausible. Skip to 50 second if you want to pay off.

We’re doing well enough without judges, the voters have been 84% successful in selecting deserving winners so far.
This round just happened to be one of the 16%.

Agreed. That OutrageousChaz clip better not show up in any “best of” compilation.
