So since my little pony friendship is magic became big and Bronies ruined the internet. I saw alot of youtube videos called "MLP MEP" click on it and go "Oh its an AMV without an anime."

Except I would later see "Full metal alchemist MEP".......that is an anime.

Recently I found out it means Mutli Editor Project, so it now made sense. AMV Hell could be called that, I now understand.

Except.....these MEPs I look at, they are not AMVs. What they are is over produced effects and text for the lyrics to the tune of the music with some random anime images and video clips.

The weirder thing......I looked at 5 diffrent makers of which 3 had studio in their name. It all looked the same, yes the music diffrent and the anime is diffrent.

Except the effects are the same......

I ask. What exactly is an MEP? and what is it VS an AMV? What is a good MEP?

An MEP is a collaboration amongst 2 or more editors in an attempt to make an overproduced video. An AMV usually just involves one guy attempting to make an overproduced video. As for a good one, well, I'm not sure if I'd classify this as "good," but I think this is the best example of an overproduced collaborative effort involving anime footage and motion graphics set to music.

I dont see as much overproduction in an actual AMV title....then again I dont see a recent AMV thats not overaly simple in all the bad ways.


MEPs seem to be a diffrent beast like there is a check list
"put a filter over the video to make it pink"
"put lyrics that fold into the video as the singer sings it"
"Use artists drawings of a character and not anime video footage, make it pop in over video"
"actual video footage should not have any correlation to the lyrics and only use it as filler
between effects and text."

THEY ALL LOOK ALIKE! Well in what I can see...its mostly motion blur thanks to the swishing about and terrible filters.

Here is an over produced AMV I have liked for years. Its good and an actual AMV while being over produced. Was there more than 1 dude on it I donno.

the correlation only happens when the intensity is low, rest is fighting. lip sync in the climax.

for the record i didnt even know this was a mep, if i recall backmask told me and also added that it was ****. now while its not perfect, in my humble opinion this video does deserve its view count. im only posting this in comparison of the other "mep"'s posted here, and to answer what is one[or atleast towards where theyre meant to go].

One thing I never understood is why people think that "effects in videos" automatically = "BEST VIDEO EVER!!!!!"

If done PROPERLY, effects are actually pretty damn cool and add a lot to the MEP/AMV (which is probably why so many want to use them at all in the first place....). The problem is that 99% of these things just throw in as many effects as possible at complete and total random with no purpose whatsoever apart from "being one of the cool kids". I'd rather watch a decent AMV with no effects than a ****ty one filled with "all the stock effects Windows Movie Maker can handle!!!!" That being said, all of my favorite MEP's/AMV's have at least one effect in them, DONE PROPERLY AND TIMED WITH INTENTION.

Sadly, such videos are so few and far between compared to "just decent" non-effect ones (which are few and far between themselves....) that everytime I see a video will have effects in it, I've already dismissed it as "yet another ****ty MEP/AMV made by a retarded idiot". On the rare occasion where I actually bother to look for AMV's to watch, I'll pretty much avoid any that use effects as much as I can.
