There are some anime openings that are good, they have catchy tunes that everyone loves. Then there are openings that perfectly represent the series pretty much summarizing the series in a beautiful tone poem or in lyrical mastery. I ask you now which animes truly capture this in a top ten or top 5 list.
Here is mine:
5. Samurai champloo
Like the Lion King opening number this lyrically gives us setting of the series. Its consistent rhythm and use of tone clusters on piano perfectly captures the characters of the samurai.
4. Baccano
This Jazz instrumental opening is a very fun tune for the series. Jazz music itself has a very dark history of taking the live of the musicians, be it drugs or poverty. The series itself has darkness and a lot of blood and death, but the tune is in a major key. The series takes place in the 30's, the era of jazz. What I can about this song is that foreshadows heroes and good guys in a very bloody series.
3. Lucky Star
When looking at the song and the series it is almost like seeing the same thing. The song is random and full or silly references, play on words, and silliness for the sake of silliness. That is pretty much the series Lucky Star
2. Azumanga Daioh
I really don't like this song. But after reading the lyrics and hearing the song several times I can attest this song make absolutely no sense, the series make no sense too; hey look at that a song that makes no sense for a series with no sense.
1. Cowboy Bebop
Such a kick**** song. Jazz musicians often lived in poverty, rarely getting gigs and often running into trouble. The song takes virtuosity in all its sections (trumpets getting really high, swung leaping sax, high soprano sax, leaping bass lines, multilayered percussion). The characters in cowboy bebob are pros at what they do, yet they can't seam to get a break.
