During Season 1 it's more gritty and believable and is clearly a mecha anime with some superpowered stuff on the side.

Whereas in Season 2 the mecha side shifts slightly with the addition of several severely overpowered mechs (Seems like all Military's ever produce are prototypes) but on the plus side it does result in some pretty awesome battles between them. On the negative side for me (I won't even try to guess Backmask's motivations :P) Season 2 also morphs into more of a superpower anime with the mechs playing backup instead.

Personally I did prefer Season 1 over Season 2 but it was still awesome (although admittedly some of the episodes were difficult, meh). Also Season 1 sorta ends on a cliffhanger which doesn't resolve any of the primary plot points. So if you want to watch it fully rather than just for something to watch then you really need to see both seasons in order to finish the story (which isn't a bad thing by any stretch).

My favourite was always the Guren Mk II, mainly because it had a giant radiation hand and was piloted by Kallen :D
