Chernobyl was caused by gross soviet incompetence and lack of safety features.

Even if there is a leak it won't be a bad one. I HIGHLY doubt that anyone will be aversely affected by this. Granted it will be a good idea to shut down the reactor and fix it all while wearing lead lined clothing, but japan is not gonna lose Tokyo to a cloud of nuclear toxins. It takes nearly 100 rads to begin showing the signs of radiation poisoning. even 1000X normal rad levels is still in the millirad levels

You can "Earthquake Proof" as much as you want. When that 15,000+ ton wall of water hits your building, there is little you can do to stop that.

There's no evidence of any radioactive leakage, but officials have confirmed that the cooling process for the nuclear plant has not yet gone according to plan.

It is the cooling process that is in question here. Because of fail-safes designed to shut the plant and lower the rods during an Earthquake. Those fail-safes seem to be what is the problem now.

Reactor's chamber itself is not damaged yet. However part of its cooling devices are malfunctioning, thus workers must cool down a reactor directly:

it became necessary to release radioactive steam to relieve pressure that could cause an explosion
Thus this have increased radiation levels by 8 times in plant's territory, what is very little (it needs to be over 100,000 to kill a human).

Read it yourself. Thanks MCdigitalP@in for the link: ^_^

Also some interesting info, which I have already posted in chatbox:

Chernobyl NPP was built in 1977, while Fukushima NPP in 1971. So it uses older technologies than Chernobyl.

plants use some of the oldest nuclear technology, dating to the 1960s. "These first-generation boiling-water reactors have the least margin of safety of any reactor design"

However now its obvious that Fukushima NPP is not earthquake proof enough itself.

You can't make anything "Proof" to anything. All you can do is hope that you are building it Resistant enough to withstand what is going to be thrown at it. At the time the Fukushima Plant was probably one of the best around. However ever 5-10 years you don't build a new Nuclear Power Plant to replace the obsolete one just because of better building techniques and materials.

Three Mile Island 2.0

At the worst situation, yes. Wasn't nearly as bad as Chernobyl, but still bad.

Veran
03-12-2011, 06:51 PM
Chernobyl NPP was built in 1977, while Fukushima NPP in 1971. So it uses older technologies than Chernobyl.

Maybe they had the plans since the late fifties. It was the soviets...

Anyway: wiki has it. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RBMK) Some words on soviet boiling water reactors. By all accounts a sophisticated design - unless you decide, like a moron, to disable all the safety features and start playing around with it.

Plans for a BWR of the type making problems. (http://www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/basic-ref/teachers/03.pdf) Now you can make your own.

According to CNN (http://edition.cnn.com/2011/WORLD/asiapcf/03/12/japan.nuclear/?hpt=T1) some 10 other reactors have shut down automatically, (and I quote: In all, the earthquake prompted the automatic shutdown of 10 reactors at three nuclear plants near the quake site, Japan's nuclear agency said.) leading me to think that those at least are the modern type in which the control rods are held in place with electro-magnets, powered by the reactor's own electricity.

That, BTW, is a safety feature that requires weapons grade levels of stupidity, ingenuity and a team of construction workers to disable.

Basically, those 10 can't physically melt down.

(Yes, the awesome exploding reactor over there seems to me to be of the old type that can cause a China syndrome - which again begs the question: can you call it a China syndrome if China isn't on the other side of the planet?)

They're not dangerous, no more dangerous than any other power plant, even less so because other power plants dump tons of toxins into the air. nuclear power plants just dump steam into the air. People don't want to sink money into nuclear power plant because the safety standards are ridiculous ( you have to bury all of the tools that were used to construct the building, before any radioactive material has been introduced) and the word nuclear scares people. There have so far been THREE count 'em ( Chernobyl, which was really bad, Three Mile Island, not that bad, and this one, which I don't think is gonna get that bad) 1 2 3, accidents in nuclear power plants, one occurring two days ago. ... you get more than 15 people together and everyone's IQ drops to 2

The joke goes thus:

To calculate the intelligence of a committee, you take the IQ of the smartest member, and divide it by the number of committee members.

Now, the IQ scale is forced into a pattern where 100 is always the middle, 68% of everybody is between 90-110, 95% are between 80-120, and 5% are beyond that - there being a floor effect at 25, and anything above 140 has no meaning. Anyone measured under 75 is a moron. (Every time they check, they find that yes, you have to have an extra chromosome to get that low.)

So, given an abnormally bright committee member would be IQ 120, and the memebrs in the committee would be 4... 30. They hit the floor. Retarded.

nuclear power plants themselves arn't dangerous but the radiom that is used is very dangerous and isn't useful forever it eventual burns out but still has residual radation which hangs around for around a hundred years so it is buried in large lead lined conncrete containers.

Well...

Radium? I thought they used uranium and plutonium. I can see where they would get radium from that though. But I'm no scientist.

According to my sources, America has some very primitive reactors because of some regulations prohibiting the use of the waste - basically, used uranium. There is a system being tested, breeder reactors (in France, that) that uses this depleted uranium.

What happens is this: a regular reactor first uses up the uranium, this takes 20+ years. Then the uranium would be shaped into some new pellets on site, and put in the breeder reactor, which uses it for... dunno, 300 years. Perhaps more.

The Chinese just finished the development of reactors that don't rely on the breeder tech, and can use regular fuel pellets for 100+ years.

The Chinese!

Don't forget that the water used to cool the rods also has to be put in radiation quarantine.

Fascinating. How do they get the radiation out of it?

acutekat

Fascinating. How do they get the radiation out of it?

Well, the actual explanation of how the water is irradiated is a little off.

The two types of generating electrical power (meaning how they turn the turbine, not how they create fission) from a nuclear power plant that i have heard of are either the water interacts freely with the radioactive part of the plant, becoming hotter and rising to the top of the chamber spinning the turbine (also radioactive ) and then cooling back down and dropping towards the hot reactor again, this is of course all sealed off and inaccessible when operational. The other type I've heard of is where there are two chambers both with water in them. Chamber 1 has sort of the same configuration as example one but does not contain the turbine. Chamber 2 contains the water that will be heated by the radioactive steam (through heating elements) and then used to spin the turbine.

There's also Mercy Corps: http://www.mercycorps.org/

Haven't found anything shady on this organization, 'course that's no guarantee that there isn't. I think in the end, it's really a crap shoot.

well, our only hopes are: Godzilla, the Eva Units, and/or the Transformers squad.

Godzilla is a force of a nature in his own right. He's probably wrestling that Tsunami monster in a Toho backlot right now, lol.

The Evas...well as I said before, weapon of war vs. mother Nature...mother nature wins.

According to Wan Pissologists, it was caused by Whitebeard breaking the fourth wall.
