Hinamizawa is also based on a real place, though from what I've seen the only look similar from far away (shots from the sky, or a nearby mountain or whatnot)

Yes. The Sound Novels feature real life photo's of locations as the BG's.

I see this in various different anime, K-ON!, Lucky Star!, etc. feature many similar places some of the locations are the same from anime to anime, many of which are based on IRL locations.

Some other locations I see in anime, that I also see in IRL (either as similiar to the location or IS the location):

Digimon 02 and Digimon Tamers
Bleach
Higurashi
Elfen Lied
Naruto (Konoha is based off of Kishi's home town in terms of layout)
High School of the Dead


Funny, since I can identify what town an Anime takes place in from me watching Godzilla movies. Miniatures or no, Toho can build pretty amazing to scale IRL cities that Godzilla and friends smash around in, to a point where I can say "Hey! Godzilla smashed that anime's city to bits in *name of godzilla film* lol.

i guess if an animes based on a real place it's easier to draw because you don't have to design an entirely new village,town or city.

i guess if an animes based on a real place it's easier to draw because you don't have to design an entirely new village,town or city.

i wasn't aware of that.
i always thought the backgrounds were hand drawn.
