Just got back from Best Buy where I saw it for $50. Is it worth it? Is it dubbed? If so, how good is the voice acting? I need info! Is it worth the $50 they're asking?

Special Editions have both subs and dub discs...with the sub disc in TV air order.

But the special edition boxset doesn't come with this!

so... just print out the picture and come up with 50 bucks to buy the box set, then?

That sounds good, not to mention cost-effective.
To be honest, I saw Melancholy before it was dubbed into English (fansubs = win), which is a rarity for me, because I typically prefer to watch anime in English (I'm not gonna fight anyone over that, either). At any rate, I thought Haruhi's seiyuu in the Japanese version did her voice extremely well, and overall just really fit Haruhi's personality. I don't know how she sounds in the English version, but if she sounds slightly yet permanently agitated and impatient, then the voice actor did a good job.

Yeah, that's about right.
I bought the first dvd, and enjoyed it fairly well (the fan-film episode was great), but I quickly realised that if I was going to watch the show as it was intended (in the jumbled up format of the origional broadcast) then I was going to have to wait and also put up alot more money. So now I'm just looking into online fansubs. Once I've seen the entire series, I'll determine if it's good enough to buy (and even then, I'm waiting for a more consice, cost-effective deal).

I saw it in broadcast order (because that's how my torrent was set up. :P) and honestly I think I liked it better that way. Now, a buddy of mine saw it in chronological order and said, "it felt like a 6-episode series and a bunch of OVAs." Personally, that would've bugged the hell out of me, but that's just me.
Also, AMVP, I played your song today. I hope you heard it. :D
(Aw crap :-X)
Sorry, I didn't catch the show. I was out a good bit today and when I got back I was somewhat distracted...
I'll try to catch it next week, okay?
Anyway, about the show. The broadcast order was intentionally arranged to flesh out and progressivly escalate the story told in the first 6 episodes (hence your friend's opinion). That also makes it harder for fans to follow it on the dvd (unless there's some broadcast order version I'm unaware of).

Yeah, broadcast order is the way to go. That's the way I saw it (Though it tripped me out, at first). A friend of mine saw it in chronological order and this is the way he describes it: "If you watch it in chornological order, you end on a stupid episode. If you watch it in [broadcast] order, you end on an awesome episode."

So if i watched it online as a preview, episode 1 would be the first broadcast episode?
Actually, it's 11 first, then one and two and...
you know what? Wiki it.

Whichever episode shows the movie the SOS Brigade makes is episode 1 in broadcast order.
Yeah, broadcast order is the way to go. That's the way I saw it (Though it tripped me out, at first).
Episode 4 (or whichever was the baseball one) is what I'm guessing threw you for a loop. I was watching it thinking, "oahwtwioasgnasdweorj wft is going on with the monsters and **** and the magic bat..."

No, that wasn't it. It was just I usually watch one episode right after another, and when I have to stop, I just try and remember the story so far and watch the next vid based on that. Unfortunately, that strategy was an epic failure...

so... what is the episode order? what chronological episode was broadcast first, second, etc.? From what I understand, the 2nd chronological ep comes first in broadcast order.
Maybe this'll help.

Yeah, I got lost at about episode (broadcast #) 7. I finished Remote Island Syndrome 1 (which left a major cliffhanger), went to the next episode, and they were suddenly back at the school. I thought my DL was all mixed up, but decided to go by (what wikipedia apparently calls) Haruhi numbers.

I got it today, I would like some opinions of whether to watch them chronologically or in broadcast order.

I'd watch it in broadcast order, cause that way the end feels like an ending.
Then I'd watch it again in chronological order because its so good. (chrono end is ok, just not as climactic.)

Personally, I think it might be a little too much... Fifty dollars for fourteen episodes... might want to wait for season 2... but does it have any kind of extras?

Wikipedia has a list of episodes and how they line up in broadcast, chronological, and DVD orders. I watched the series in the DVD's order; I recommend either that or chronological, as broadcast will confuse anyone who hasn't read the light novels.

Just download all 14 episodes. Make sure u get .mkv (Dual-Audio and subs). I think the English Dub was good. Better then some anime's i've seen. On Episode 12 the Singing Part is better in Japanese. U can't really hear the music as much in the Dubbed on.

Funny as hell Series. I can't wait tell Season 2 comes out. I've already began reading the Light Novels.
They will be funny when they are made into episodes.

I think this is funny read this, this is from (Light Novel)
Suzumiya Haruhi Volume 5 - The Rampage of Suzumiya Haruhi
(This might Contain Spoilers if they make this chapter into a episode in the anime, just a warning just in case u don't want to know what's gonna happen now.)
(the ........ skip some talking but not much. just to get to the point)
(The one's in the Conversation are Kyon, Yuki Nagato, Mikuru Asahina, and Itsuki Koizumi.
You will have to figure out who is saying what but it should be pretty much obvious.
Things that are Italized are most of the time Kyon talking or thinking something.)
------------------------------------------------------------
"We will keep experiencing the events that have occurred in the same timeframe."
"To be precise, from August the 17th to the 31st."
"In other words, we are forever trapped in a never-ending summer vacation."
"It is an ENDLESS SUMMER that will not terminate itself.
Within this world, let alone fall, not even September will come.
In other words, this world has no future beyond August.
Asahina cannot return to the future for this reason, and it is logically sound.
One cannot contact the future if the future does not exist, which can be taken as self-evident."
..................
"This time, Suzumiya-san did not recreate the world, but instead severed time, from August 17th - 31st.
As such, this world right now only has a lifespan of 2 weeks.
There is no time before the 17th, nor is there any from the 1st of September on.
In other words, this is a world where September will never arrive."
.................
Later on, Asahina-san basically explained this issue to me.
Of course, sniffles were intertwined with the explanation.
"Uuu... Lemme think... I have continued to use classified information to contact the future or to do classified information... Urr. I only feel something is wrong when I have had no contact from classified information for a week.
And then classified information...
Makes me very worried, so I tried to use classified information and the answer was classified information...
Uuu... Waa! Whatever should I do..."
What to do? I have no clue. Is classified information some highly sensitive words that must be censored?
................
"Time will reset when it reaches 24 o'clock on the 31st of August, returning to the 17th. I don't know the details, but it appears that there is a SAVE POINT at the dawn of the 17th."
Then what of our... No, the memory of all of humanity?
"They will all be readjusted. The collective memory of all humans throughout the 2 weeks will be zeroed and restarted from the beginning."
........
Wouldn't all human beings have felt this?
"Supposedly, no. You and I are special exceptions. It appears that only those who are near Suzumiya-san are likely to experience the changes to the world."
"What of Haruhi? Does that woman have no sense whatsoever?"
"It seems not. If she did, this matter would be far more complicated..."
Koizumi glanced in the direction of Nagato, asking for the alien's input.
Nagato answered with a calm expression.
"This would be the fifteen-thousand four hundred ninety-eighth time." (15,498th)
........
"The same 2 weeks have repeated for more than 10,000 times. Assuming any layperson could feel that they were trapped in this loop and memory accumulated, they would break down.
As for the memories of Suzumiya-san, I suspect that they must have been wiped much more thoroughly than ours."
One must consult the oracle in such moments. I asked for Nagato's confirmation:
"Is this so?"
"Yes."
Nagato nodded.
"So we have already done whatever it is we will be doing tomorrow? Would the O-bon and the goldfish be like that as well?"
"Not necessarily."
Nagato conveyed not a shred of emotion.
"There are discrepancies with Suzumiya Haruhi's activities within the last 15,497 cycles."
She looked toward me slightly and continued.
"In the last 15,497 cycles, O-bon has been omitted twice.
Obon sans goldfish catching occurred a total of 734 times.
The city pool has been visited without fail as of this cycle.
Part-time work has been conducted a total of 9,025 times with 6 variations in the nature of the work.
Other than distributing balloons, there has also been stock loading, cash register, flyer distributions, call answering, as well as a model fashion show.
There have been 6,011 balloon distributions, with 360 overlaps in 2 or more variations.
Repeated iterations sorted by order of combination are-"
"That's enough, you don't have to continue."
I started to think to myself after the alien-made artificial human quieted down.
.........
Wait. 15,498 x two weeks.
The total would be 216,972 days.
Eh- roughly 594 years worth of days.
This girl had carried on through the passing of every single one of those days, every single cycle, and had witnessed everything that had occurred nonchalantly.
Even the most patient of humans would be drained of patience after that.
........
"How many times have we discovered this?"
My sudden question seemed anticipated by Nagato, as she calmly answered:
"8,769 times. Frequency of detection increases with each iteration."
"That is because of the sense of incoherence and familiarity, perhaps."
Koizumi said this matter-of-factly.
"But even in those repeating cycles, even if we discovered our situation, we still failed to remedy the situation and restore time?"
"Correct," Nagato replied.
(Ok enough of my talking. Sry for talking too much. You Must read these though. Info about them can be here:
