So I've been looking all over the place trying to identify it, but between the wikipedia article, farious fan-sites, and even a few music identification programs (which always fail because there's dialogue overlaying the music) I've gotten nowhere.

There's actually 2 songs I've been trying to identify, but I think I got one of them figured out.

Basically, does anyone know the name of the orchestral piece that plays during the season 1 finale (the second half of the "dream" sequence with Kyon and Haruhi)? It's been bugging me for awhile. :(

The other song I was looking for was the one that plays during the ending of Day of Sagittarius, the scene between Kyon and Nagato, but I think I have it identified as Shostakovich's Symphony #7 "Leningrad". Correct me if I'm wrong.

I believe it is Symphony no 8 by Gustav Mahler. I do not know the name of the piece.
"Leningrad" is in the episode where they do the warship thing so you are correct on that one. In the end of that episode it plays sections of the final movement of Symphony no 4 by Tchaikovsky. There are some other things in the too. These are the most significant.

Once you gave me the name I checked that first song, and yeah: It's bits and pieces from the first movement of Mahler's Symphony #8 ("Symphony of a Thousand"). So you were pretty much correct.
