I agree. A well placed plant, rock, bottle, drawer, etc. can add lulz to an otherwise "meh" scene. At the very least, it doesn't take away from the scene. Using censor bars is just too crude, and usually ends up just being a distraction.

The Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei way of hilariously censoring was probably the coolest thing ever. I mean it. That cemented my appreciation for the series.

I'm pretty sure they could have gotten away with not censoring it. It's just much better that way.

Actually Cartoon Network put English over all the Japanese writing, even full page technical documents. It's even more thorough than my DVD box set in that regard.
