If audio is out of sync, its because you are using an outdated version of haali media splitter that contains a bug. You need to download an updated one: http://haali.su/mkv/

Monkey brings AMV Hell 5 to me

I am seeding, at max!

1) Dr. Who = Epic, that was just fantastic...would have made more sense with a 'Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, but still good.

2) IF there's going to be a DVD/Re-release, need to fix the Tenchi Muyo, if possible.
There's already a finely censored version of that scene, black bars take away from the comedy of it.

-----
So, I've written 43 comments as a 'steam of thought' kind of a deal...why? Because I felt like it.

Overall I think this was one of the better AMV Hells made.
Up in my top three or four (I'm counting minis and adult stuff).

There was some audio issues, volume had to be turned up and down, which is to be expected given this is made from various sources.

Overall, I felt the pacing was pretty good and the quality of the videos submitted were higher than I expected them to be.

TL;DR?:
AMV Hell 5 was a nice ride and better than I expected.

In my opinion, it was AWESOME! Comparable to 3 IMHO. 3 or 5>4 (due to over use of same animes in 4).

The only thing I noticed was that some of the clips used were previously used on the Mini's, at least two, but I have a feeling there were three... but all of the clips were worthy of being done twice.

As for people having issues with it playing, the new vlc player is awesome. If you are using an older version of vlc, it will mess up like everything else.

And I'm talking to the guy who does the server stuff so we can get this up and streaming on the SimGirls forum ASAP.

I know everyone will love this at Motaku this coming weekend!

And now, I go to bed. ^_^ I will continue to keep the torrent active while I sleep. yay. :D

The most obvious things that I had problems with were the repeated uses of the same songs. The most notable was 'Always', but there was also 'Halo' and 'Sweet Transvestite' to mention a few. Not to be said of the clips themselves, (although some were less impressive than others) there was no reason to use the same concept so many times. The best one should have been chosen for each song, and the others should have been shelved for a special features/deleted scenes bonus.

The diversity of the anime used was anything but. There were at least 17 clips using DBZ, and 10 using Death Note. I couldn't even keep track of how many Pokemon clips there were. It was very mind numbing to see the same half dozen series making up the bulk of this entire hour and 26 minute video.
Not only this, but a lot of the scenes chosen seemed identical, or virtually identical to other clips using the same series. Particularly, the clips that used The Girl Who Lept Through Time.

In many cases, there was a lack of comedic timing. I understand that everyone had a cutoff time of 30 seconds per clip, but 30 seconds is not always necessary. Many clips seemed to just keep going after the idea had been driven home in the first 10 seconds, just because they were entitled to 20 more seconds.
In addition, a lot of these gags were not well thought out, and were very minor connections to the source material. For example, 'Halo' being used with the Halo anime. There was no real connection. They were simply paired together because they shared the same name.

Overall, there were a few gems in the entire video (about 10% in my opinion), but the bulk was long, uninteresting, and ultimately a disappointment compared to it's predecessors.

/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/
10-03-2010, 11:32 AM
I see.

I agree that there should only be a SLIGHT repetition of certain anime to make this particular genre excel. Also, Clip lengths. 30 seconds it a bit too long IMO, it should come be 15-20 seconds at the most. And songs, well, getting the right ones for the right clips is tricky, but you don't repeat the same song 20 times over. It just makes it dull, boring and repetitive.

It's just you. I just watched it now and had no problems. I use K-Lite Codec Pack; their latest version fixes some bugs in MPC itself from what I remember.

Overall a great and amazing piece of art, well done SSGWNBTD and Zarxrax! Many of them comedic, a couple that I didn't find too humorous, but I think it did a wonderful job in introducing many different anime that I haven't seen.

I will say, it felt like there were some video/music clips used too many times, but IMO, I personally got a kick out of seeing "Halo" over and over again. It was like the Osaka clips from 3 for me.

That ending was epic. Not a big fan of the genre, but major props to that guy who did that!

AMV Hell 5 is a definite keep on my computer!

I have to say that the repitition of Halo and Sweet transvestite where boring, but I found the Always repition funny since it was always about unicorns. It seemed like the Always parts where planned out to repeat while the others just got reused.

Could'nt agree more on the diversity, I could have bared the Death note overuse if it at least used more than just L and Light in every clip. Some simpler ones with a "oh I get it and move on" feel could've been cut. Like the friends on the other side one.

But even with all that I still found the rest hilarious and entertaining.

This feels just like AMV Hell 4 when it was released. Complaints about repeated animes (Azumanga in 3 will always be more than Death Note/DBZ in 4/5). On top of that, i felt like there was less meme stuff to it than 4, where many of the jokes flew over people's head. Well it's no 3, i'd put it above 4 easily. Though, besides Always, i also didn't like the repeating song buisness. For some reason, Always was just funny everytime.

I gotta say, I am no mindless worshiper to amvhell like some are to obama or their fav band... but I liked a lot of it, some seemed to be crap thrown in, and ya they used death note a lot, but I noticed it and liked it, and some songs were re-used ya sure, but also they needed more material and I found the songs and anime clips used many diff ways gave perspective on how many different ways the clip could have gone, some were better then others and some need to think twice about "was that good" or "do I like this and no one else" It encourages people to try harder and make better ones.

I have seen AMV hell 3 over 100 times easy, and 4 prob around there. while with 5 being it's new to me and I dont get many references it made me want to look up some anime from clips, download some songs from clips, laugh out loud, sing a long and make others around me wonder whats wrong with me, ie; my gf and her mom. so in the end it was win, win to the max. but I wish it wasn't sensored, I know its not 0 or /0 but to have it bleep out words even? cable tv has more swearing then this video.

I would have liked to see more meme's, maybe a bit longer of a video too, and perhaps some variety. i think when people were making clips and submitting it would have helped to see music clips others were using to steer people from overlapping songs and anime to increase chances of your clip making it in and making it so that we didn't have so much over lapping.

I guess its an idea for the future, but for now ima watch it, read the credits when out for animes i want, and songs i want, wait for the soundtrack since i own all the others, and show it to all my friends

I thought it was amazing. Could've used maybe half the DBZ and Death Note clips (I however am a big Death Note fan so I laughed at pretty much all of them, either way...) but I'm pretty sure this one's beaten 4 for being my favorite. Only clip I didn't like at all was the High School of the Dead one; aisde from that it seemed pretty 'family-friendly'.

I was really, really, REALLY happy to see Gantz (Singin' In The Rain), Speed Grapher, and Darker Than Black (smile like you mean it) in there, oh my goodness. Best clips imo were Higurashi/Scary Movie 3, Cool Guys Walk Away From Explosions (I was insanely happy to see that a shot from Gundam 00 was included. Seriously, I don't think there's any clips from any of the Gundam series at all in any other AMV Hell, which really surprises me), Paprika/I'm On Shrooms, Gurran Lagann/Megas XLR, Soul Eater/Team Rocket, and Haruhi/5 Dollar Footlongs. Phew! Run-on sentences.

Seriously, I think I'm going to need to submit some stuff to Minis or whatever next time a chance rolls around. Keep up the awesome work, guys.

Anyway you can render a mac friendly version? I was able to watch this on my moms labtop perfectly which is a windows, but I have a macbook and it can't read the file.
This is pretty unusual since my system runs Quicktime Pro and has numerous codecs that can read any movie file. I downloaded AMV Hell 5, but it freezes, glitches up like crazy, then shuts down. Is there something I'm missing or did you just make a perfect render for Windows only?

Maybe there should be a cap on number of series and songs, and the ones chosen are determined by level of humor (not date submitted)? I submitted two DN clips along with a variety of others (and maybe one more I did randomly that ssgwnbtd may have put in but I don't know yet because it won't plaaaayyyyy) but there's really no way of knowing what others are going to submit as well. I wouldn't have minded one of mine getting clipped out if there were funnier ones.

Okay, yes I would have, but it seems like a fair policy? I'd be sad but it's still pretty fair.

...still hope mine would be funny enough to be kept, though. >_>

EDIT AGAIN: I REINSTALLED VLC AND IT SEEMS TO BE WORKING. I'LL BE BACK LATER WITH A FULL OPINION. YAY.

anything I hated about this Hell, the "nom nom" vid made up for. Funniest sh-- I've ever seen in my life.

I myself never really gave a damn about anime rape. Had no problem at all with the abundance of DN and pokemon. It's the audio repeating that got on my nerves a bit. All and all though, while not on par with Hell 3, but above 4. Upon my first viewing anyway.

My opinion will most likely change (for better or worse) once I'm able to view it again in better quality. But I can't do that until this damn download's finished.

@Skirker: Still, at the end of the credits for 4, they said it was really the last one, yet they (luckily) broke their promise. I'm just doublechecking. Besides, Minis isn't as awesome & popular as the Hell series, which is why I wanted to be a part of the Hell series.

Yeah, I had two in there. One with Lucky Star and it was by far the quietest amv in AMV Hell 5. Using Audacity you can amplify song digitally and re-export it as .wav

If they do decide 5 will be the last one, but then they ended up throwing out that idea. Then it'll probably take them another 5 years (It came out in 2005, right?) to break that promise and come out with AMV Hell 6.

Actually, Hell 4 came out in 2007. So, if they DO make Hell 6 (which is a pretty slim chance I hope works), it'll probably be in 2013 or 2014.

it must be 3 that says 2005 on the credits then. but 6 would be fun! although they're probably too busy with all the stuff going on with 5 that they aren't even going to think about that for a long time.

I just got finished watching Hell 5 again, and I got a clear look at Roll the Stampede's tribute at the end (The vid was a bit too blurry in the live stream.)

I got done watching 5 and was shocked when I realized who the tribute was for. Everyone had been referring to him as "RTS" so it didn't occur to me just who they were talking about. Ah well. I suppose I'll save it for the next Minis season, then.

Incidentally, what's with all the shouting against spoilers all of a sudden? How can you 'spoil' something which doesn't have any semblance of plot or narrative? It's not as if knowing that there's a credits sequence affects your enjoyment of it!

Shirker
10-03-2010, 10:43 PM
Meh, I can see how it'd be an issue. Part of comedy (in fact, a big hulking mass of it) is about shock value. Knowing of some of the jokes before hand ruins the "surprise".

There's no need to apologise, animemental1, what gives you the impression that I'm angry? I do think that it's a little silly to worry about spoilers and I don't think that impinges upon the video, but just taking a different position isn't a state of hatred and an exclamation mark doesn't automatically equate to outrage! Don't worry about things.

Golden Boy - White Girls

AH5 was a ton of fun. Not all the clips were LOL-funny, and some I didn't find funny at all, but that's been true of the rest of the series. There were easily enough "golden" clips to make it worth watching. I think my fave was the Death Note Vuvuzelas.

Spooky fact: I edited the "Azumanga Dio" clip two weeks before Dio passed away. (I didn't know he was sick) It's the 2nd time that's happened this year : I did an AMV to a Type O Negative song a couple of months before Peter Steele finally found rest.

Thanks to SSG, Zarx and everyone who contributed. I'll look forward to seeing this one at the conventions.

PS I liked the Roll tribute. His clips really were the best of AH3, and AH3 is what started me watching and editing AMVs (and watching too much anime), so I owe him a lot. RIP Roll.

Technically, I think Hells 3, 4, & 5 all have a different reason for being awesome.

Hell 3 was comparable to excellent aged wine. I say aged because Hell 3 had a lot of old jokes as well as old animes (Excel Saga, Cowboy Bebop, Azumanga Daioh, Golden Boy, etc.).

Hell 4 had a bit more diversity in the anime selections (Lucky Star, Haruhi Suzumiya, Death Note, Code Geass, etc.). Plus, the humor was more modern than the jokes in 3. The reason why it wasn't as good as 3 was probably the spamming of animes like Haruhi Suzumiya & Death Note. ESPECIALLY Death Note (I blame SSG. No offense, SSG.).

Hell 5 (even though I haven't seen it yet) is like Hell 4, cause it also has a more expanded selection of anime (K-On!, Hetalia: Axis Powers, Clannad, Gurren Lagann, etc.). The reason it's probably not as funny to everyone is probably because 3 & 4 probably took all the good jokes. Still, like I said about 4, Hell 5 has some moments where it is just as awesome, possibly better than 3 & 4.

And that, gentlemen & ladies, is my opinion.

One the most hilarious to me was the Lucky Star pairing with Hayden's Symphony No. 94 in G Major (more commonly known as the "Surprise" Symphony). Perfect timing. Overall I thought this movie was pretty good, my only major issue being some repetition problems (outside of the halo jokes which stuck me as a good running gag).

I think my fave was the Death Note Vuvuzelas.

:bzz: *dances* Thanks! XD

And yeah, I'd put this Hell in the same ballpark as the others. There's something in it for everyone! I think whatever people don't like repeated is what they've seen recently - I made two DN clips for this one because it's... well, I'm a fanatic. >_> But I purposefully rounded it out with a bunch of others, and series that I hadn't even touched with editing in ages. Because I knew people would be sort of all "DN, again?" (trust me, as a fanatic I'm used to hearing that). But I'm glad the vuvuzela one was a hit (I still savor the cheer I heard it get at the Otakon preview). Trust me - if fangirls WERE given vuvuzelas, they'd be using them in that scene. >___>

Another thing that keeps things from being repeated without standing out is art style. If something's got a very distinctive art style (like DN) that doesn't blend as well with some of the other series, it's going to stick out. Like, I'm not hearing too many complaints about the ~moe~ series that got repeated. There's repetition all over the place; you just don't notice it when it's something you want to see.

In any case, I think my absolute favorites were Slayers/Lion King, Die Scarface Die, When a Man loves a Chicken, "Oh cool, you have a dog??", I Threw it on the Ground, Ouran/Mustard (sheer wtf factor was amazing), Haydn's Surprise Symphony, and ALL the Tenchi clips (especially the gaming one and the Aeka/Heavy one).

I'll admit I was sad about the Tea Partay clip because I'd edited a (granted, ****ty) video of that back in '08. But I can't blame anyone - the song just SCREAMS Ouran, and this one was done beautifully. (Oh and sad that someone got to Rebel L before I did. Hee.)

also apparently everything I write is tl;dr lately so, sorry.

Idk why you said mpc sucks I use it for all my anime it works better the all players and never had any trouble with it and I played amvhell 5 on it just fine I rather use mpc over wmp11...Ot any other player

I prefer to use Zoom player max with the cccp installed. this combination has a very advanced subtitle display. it can read the sub data on a per character basis and color codes sub by character. it also reads the text translation data that sub'ers will place in anime to translate signs, papers, and other japanese text.

That aside, this was a fun ride. Some things were just meh-ish, but there were just as many effin awesome clips in it as well, so it balances out. Same as always, I guess.
Also, I didn't mind the repetition of songs/some anime that some complained about.

I just gotta say that SSGWNBTD did an AMAZING job with the end credits. I didn't really look at the animation the first time cause I was concentrating on actually reading the text. Just now I sat down and watched what was happening in the "background", and wow. So clever and uplifting. Even better than the ones for 4.

SSGWNBTD, any chance of a textless version ?

Just finished watching it; First 50 mins = awesomesauce. and then it gets a bit monotonous. The repetition of songs seemed very unnecessary Nothing was gained from having both or in some cases ALL the amv's in there for the one song. the last 30-40 minutes lacked flare, i was all the time waiting to be slapped back awake with a Big something and it didn't come. I didn't mind so much about reusing stuff from the minis but i'm sure it wasn't necessary, did you really feel it needed to be stretched out longer?
I get the intro and the meaning and purpose behind it but I do feel Amv hell is just not amv hell without a proper intro.
On the whole, there is a good amv hell 5 in there somewhere, i just don't think it has found it's way out of the box yet. Not disappointed but not impressed either. i preferred all previous eps bar 2.
Sorry if this enrages anyone, but i was expecting big things for a long time as i know a lot of you were.
Props to the editors and compilers, you did your best with what was given to you.
Perhaps there's scope for a 5 1/2 ? just a thought.

I wonder how you can make speed like 700 kpbs by ussing torrents. How have you done that?

It really does depend on your ISP. If you want higher throughput, you probably want to stay away from DSL and try to move towards cable (or fiber-optic, if possible) to get higher speeds.

I had a local phone company as my ISP (non fi-op, not available in my area) and got about 1mbps on a good day. Once I switched to Time Warner, I started getting 1.5MBps regularly, it's pretty awesome.

Of course, all of this means nothing unless there's a good amount of seeders.

Although, I'm keeping my DirecTV. Way better than Time Warner cable.

This is counting all the series that had 6 or more clips in AMV Hell 5, plus comparing them to Hells 3 & 4. I might not be counting AMVs with various clips, though...:

Dragon Ball - 16 clips (5 in AH3 ; 13 in AH4)
Evangelion - 12 clips (19 in AH3 ; 12 in AH4)
Death Note - 12 clips (18 in AH4)
Pokemon - 9 clips (3 in AH3 ; 8 in AH4)
Azumanga Daioh - 7 clips (24 in AH3 -- 35 if you count the Mac/Osaka clips ; 13 in AH4)
Full Metal Alchemist - 7 clips (3 in AH3 ; 10 in AH4)
One Piece - 7 clips (1 in AH3 ; 12 in AH4)
Naruto - 6 clips (8 in AH3 ; 7 in AH4)
Haruhi Suzumiya - 6 clips (9 in AH4)
Ouran High School Host Club - 6 clips

Good to know the calls of "too much of the same anime!" is kinda bulls--t (relatively, of course).

On another note, it saddens me that most of my RL friends won't get the genius of that Princess Tutu/Sweeny Todd clip. It was perfect. I have a friend who's into everything Johnny Depp, but she's not too familiar with the Hell series. Maybe it's time to introduce her to it....

Good to know the calls of "too much of the same anime!" is kinda bulls--t (relatively, of course).

Considering the only anime with any major upswing was Dragon Ball (Pokemon only had a mild boost each Hell). At least most of the Death Note vids this time around did more than the standard "People Die LULZ" jokes of Hell 4.

Eva had at least one vid cut from the AWA premiere. It's still in the credits AMV (Shinji about to kiss Asuka). I think it was set to The Cars' "Just What I Needed".

For those wondering, Soul Eater and Gurren Lagann had 5 clips each, barely surpassing K-On!, Hellsing, Excel Saga, & FMP:Fumoffu (not the Full Metal Panic series in general, ALL Fumoffu).

Also, anyone else notice a rise in video game related AMVs?

I can only hope that I garnered more interest in Astro Fighter Sunred.

Thanks for the stats, I had a feeling that there was way more DN in AH4.

I count 5 clips that were removed from the AWA version; 3 were obviously to avoid duplication of song or source footage, 2 cause I guess they weren't funny enough.

Also, there are 2 extra SSGWNBTD clips in the new version.

Can't remember what SSGWNBTD clips were added (Triple Rainbow? Do You Love My Hair?). Trying to remember what clips were removed:

- Eva / Just What I Needed : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xNl0hBJbpE4
- Halo Legends / Metroid (could barely hear the audio at AWA)
- Utena / Jessie's Girl
- 2nd Highschool of the Dead clip right after the 1st one at the beginning

Shortened clips that I know of:

- Animal Crossing / Silent Hill
- Excel Saga / Scars
- Azumanga Daioh / Mr. Sandman

After seeing it a few times and mulling it over, I've decided this is only really a disappointment if this is the very last full-length AMV Hell. If not, this was more than fine as a solo effort by SSG. I still find it very entertaining, and should SSG decide to make a 6, I expect him to learn the mistakes made in this one.

Overall, I say not bad, but not as a good as previous AMV Hells.

But seriously, did anyone really expect this to be as awesome as AMV Hell 3?

Is the sequence of videos done randomly or by what jives with what? Or are all the best ones left for the beginning and ending?

SSGWNBTD stated it's semi-random, setting up so that the jokes won't try to supercede each other (e.g. too busy laughing at one to miss the next). You can tell where similar clips fit together pretty cohesively, though (Yu-Gi-Oh! "Miami style" -> K-On! "YEAAAAAAAAAHHHH!!")

Anyone know how to fix this?

Also, when i tried to play it on VLC it just crashed.

I couldn't figure out a way to make my existing players play it back correctly. I caved and ended up downloading the newest version of VLC which played it fine (although it changed every video icon I had to the VLC one).

This needs a recut badly. About half an hour's worth of material just isn't worth watching, which kills the parts that definitely are awesome clips. Another ten minutes is shaveable by virtue of the fact that too many damn clips are about five to ten seconds over the funny threshold. The balance of funny stuff and clip brevity also seems skewed towards the front. I mean, sure, even 3 wasn't perfect, but the whole length was much more watchable. Of course, the biggest disadvantage of 3's length was that it took a longass time to download back in 2005.

That's assuming there will be another.

I've never had any problems playing 5, but that's probably because I went codec-downloading-crazy when I first got my computer. I must make sure that NOTHING IS UNPLAYABLE.

Someone needs to recut AMV Hell 1, 2, 3, 4, CE, and 5 into one long big video.

It'd probably be about 3 hours long... but it would be like an AMV Hell Directors Cut Special Edition.

Also, I should say, there are a boat load of funny clips in this one, (My favorite being the Chobits - GI JOE PSA, and the Dragonball Z Inglorious Basterds one) but theres also a handful of ones that are just... meh. didn't really get a reaction out of me and kind of served as a good buffer so if I was pissing myself laughing, I could do so through said clip.

For You Daratum and anyone else who is having this problem. Although, the easy fix I have for it is get VLC media player, Reliable, Stable, and plays just about everything right off the download.

If you wanna watch it on your itouch or what have you, then use the fix in the link.

If anyone is still willing to re-encode AMV hell 5, I'd be really grateful if someone made an x-box compatible .avi. I've been trying to do the re-encode myself, but I don't really know what I'd doing, and none of the files seem to work.

Has anyone transcoded to an .m4v for iPad/iPod/iPhone? I tried, but the .mp4 makes QuickTime unhappy ("invalid public movie atom" on QT Player 7, and mangled video [like this post http://amvhell.com/showpost.php?p=164555&postcount=66 ] on QuickTime Player X).

Plays on VLC, but transcoding from VLC never works.

Doomimus
10-08-2010, 01:04 PM
To any Mac users out there, you can use Handbrake to convert the movie if it's giving you the "public movie atom" message. On my end, I just used the usual settings for mp4 without changing the more intricate stuff. VLC is also an option as stated above.

You should totally do this.

We'll all have to watch it together in the afterlife while we exchange statements of, "Seriously, I was not expecting it to happen for real."

Finally decided to watch it. There were very few clips that I actually enjoyed. There were some more that were actually well made. A lot of clips, however, lacked wither video quality, sound quality, or both. I heard at least 2 different sound clips used 3 times each. Some clips had almost exact same footage as other clips. The lucky star rickroll was an idea stolen from AMV Blitz and of much lower quality than the original.

Boy, it made my heart proud to finally see my work in AMV Hell... that checks one of my life goals off the list!

Watched AMV Hell 5 with my boyfriend today. It was AWESOME. I enjoyed how many things from the old Pokemon CD were on there (like the Soul Eater x Team Rocket song clip). Too many awesome things on this one to list.

ALSO, I loved how this was made to fit a "general audience!" I hope that AMV Hell will continue in this tradition! It made me SOOOO happy that the sexual content in this one was kept to a high minimum. Now I can actually recommend it to my friends! :D

I finished it twice in a row. It was AWESOME...EXCEPT for TWO things.

1. I didn't contribute to it.

2. Ending song. The animation was genius, but the song sucked. I felt like I was watching a tribute to MJ instead of Dio.

Other than that, most of Hell 5's clips were good. Can't wait for Hell 6.
